Family friend of mine killed someone drunk driving a few decades back. I know more than one person who's lost family to a drunk driver.

Fuck off. Don't act like this is about substance abuse issues. Countless addicts and alcohols do not drive drunk. Get drunk all you want, do whatever drugs you want, but the moment you step into the drivers seat you're a piece of shit who deserves whatever is coming. Don't act like a victim for pointlessly endangering random people's lives.

What's the answer then to stopping drunk drivers killing people. Which happens daily. Telling them not to do it doesn't work, What's our next line of defense?

Disclaimer I don't know if that's true, I feel like I've read it elsewhere on Lemmy, though I never verified it.
The news story was regarding people getting insurance quotes, the group pf people the story was about have either owned a Tesla or were getting a new quote on a new/existing Tesla. It would make sense that people who drive like shit would want driver assist technology.
I guess you can narc to under and not involve gunmen. Still getting him fired is harsh but thats the public safety goal.
I've gotten a few reports on this comment. I'm going to leave it up simply because I think the comments responding to it are good comments. And to be clear, I think it's morally correct to narc on a drunk driver. No one is moralizing about substance abuse. Drunk drivers kill people. It's that simple.
No one calling the cops on a person for being drunk. Drink all the booze you want. Just. Don't. Drive.
