[Day 13] Worst Prompt Yet (piefed-media.feddit.online)

Worst Prompt Yet

This may seem like one of the worst prompts that I have posted so far. And, hopefully they don't get any worse (honestly, I don't recall, I put all these together over a month ago).

Day Thirteen Prompt

This may be the worst prompt yet. But, it should, possibly server as a reminder too. When everything is going bad, take the time to look for something good. Something worth holding on to, taking the edge off all the bad news in the world.

What News Story Makes You Happy? Why?

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of the earlier prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

Leader Board Update

I've been giving this a bit of thought. I think posting the LeaderBoard in here twice a week should be sufficient to show the progress the participants are making in the goal. My current thought is to post it on Sunday and Thursday, but I might change the days if I think of a reason to.

Instead, I will supply the link to the LeaderBoard most days.

[Day 12] Random Words (piefed-media.feddit.online)

Random Words

Here's a prompt you can use whenever you are stuck for something to write about. There's a similar idea coming up later involving another truly random way to get an idea for something to write about.

Day Twelve Prompt

There are times when I will come across some phrase or some little piece of text that just jumps out at me. It sparks something in my imagination, and I want to explore it, see what concepts or ideas are there. Those can be some of the most rewarding writing sessions I have with my journal - some idea or concept that I would have normally written about just seems to materialize in front of my eyes.

Choose some Random Words from Social Media, or a News Article to Write Something.

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of the earlier prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

[Day 11] I Sing a little Song (piefed-media.feddit.online)
submitted 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) by Unattributed@feddit.online to c/nanowrimo2@feddit.online

I Sing a little Song

Okay, so this title is actually a reference to a song. It was something really obscure that I couldn't remember for a moment, but when I searched for it, I found it. But the weirdest part: the song doesn't have the lyric in it.

But, the reason I bring up the song is the title: Playground In My Mind (by Clint Holmes). Can you imagine a better song title for a journal writing session? I don't think I can.

Day Eleven Prompt

Do you have some song that has stuck with you for years and years after you heard it? I mentioned "Playground In My Mind" above, but ironically, that is not the song that I would choose for this prompt.

No, there is a song that (for me) is an experience like no other. My discovery of this song came at a special time, and it has a special association for me. Is there are any song like that for you?

What Is Your Favorite Song? Why? Does It Hold a Special Memory for You?

[Day 10] What Would You Invent? (piefed-media.feddit.online)

What Would You Invent?

Some of the greatest inventions in the world have started from obscure ideas their inventors have had. What is yours?

Day Ten Prompt

This is the prompt to explore the inner inventor in yourself. Dust off the old notes that are sitting in the back of your brain and write about the thing that would make your life easier.

There is this idea in the open source software world that most projects start because someone had "an itch to scratch". That's just a fancy way of saying they had an idea, and they decided to actually do it. Many more of us have those itches, but we don't pursue them. What itch would you scratch?

If You Could Invent Something to Make Your Life Easier, What Would It Be? How Would It Work?

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of the earlier prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

[Day 09] The Dream That Didn't Leave (piefed-media.feddit.online)

The Dream that Didn't Leave

Dreams, they are a fertile ground for exploration of your mind. But, it's also a place that needs a lot of caution. Dream interpretation can be fraught with dangers that are best done with the help of a professional. This is a warning.

Day Nine Prompt

This prompt may not work for everyone. There are some people that either don't have dreams, or don't remember any of their dreams. However, for those that do have and can recall their dreams, this is the prompt for them.

Some dreams are elusive, and some are extremely vivid. This is the time to think about one of those vivid dreams, one that you couldn't let go. One of those dreams that just stuck with you, and you know why it stuck with you.

Have You Had a Dream that Stuck with You? What Was It? Why Did It Stick with You?

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of these early prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

[Day 08] The Most Boring Prompt (piefed-media.feddit.online)

The most Boring Prompt

"Let's talk about the weather."

It's one of the most dreaded sentences to either hear or say in a conversation. It's a sure way to indicate that you have so little in common with someone else that the only thing you can think of is the weather.

Is that what this is? Just a silly, stupid, boring prompt?

Day Eight Prompt

Read the prompt again... There is a keyword in this prompt that should make it obvious that it is not as boring as it first seems. That keyword is: Feel.

Use the weather as a gateway to exploring your feelings. They don't have to be deep, you aren't trying to uncover some past trauma. Relating your feelings to things that are external that you can't control is a way to discover some new things about yourself.

Write About How the Weather Today Is Making You Feel.

[Day 07] Unrequited Love (piefed-media.feddit.online)

Unrequited Love

Love is one of those topics that can be either mature and deeply personal, or it can be immature and childish like. Looking at a subject like unrequited love can help us to understand some things about ourselves more. Maybe help us become the person that we need to be in order to give and receive love in a healthy manner.

Day Seven Prompt

Is there someone in your life that you love, but you know that love will never be returned? Or, if they do love you, it's not in the way you wish they could return your love?

This is, I think, something that has become more rare in society today. We're more likely to have love / hate relationships, or parasocial relationships than we are to have unrequited love.

But, maybe you have had this experience. If you have, it might be worth exploring it a bit.

Have You Ever Experienced Unrequited Love?

[Day 06] Success! (piefed-media.feddit.online)

Success!

Time for the reward from the stress of the last prompt. This time we're looking at success, or at least we're looking at how you define success for yourself. And, this may actually be one of the things that causes you stress – so it seemed like a perfect follow on prompt.

Day Six Prompt

Have you had any successes in your life? Is this something that even matters to you?

It seems like, especially in work life, you are often judged by the things that you (and others) would deem to be a success. But is that they kind of success that really matters to you? Or is it something completely different?

This prompt is here for you to explore your relationship with the concept of success.

What Is Success for You? Is It a Big Accomplishment, or Something Small You Do Frequently?

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of these early prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

[Day 05] Stress Time (piefed-media.feddit.online)

Stress Time

This is a topic that is perfect for dealing with in journals. The concept of stress is one of those things most of us deal with, anywhere from the daily work stress to something out of the ordinary.

Understanding the things that cause you stress is one of the ways that you can use your journal to help improve your life.

Day Five Prompt

I don't know how you feel about this time of year, but it used to cause me a lot of stress. First there was the stress from the holidays. Then there was the stress from the unpredictable weather in my region of the country. And, when all of that was over, there was the stress of having to go back to work or school.

So, what about you? Does this time of year cause you stress? Or is there something else that causes stress for you?

What Causes You Stress? Why Does It Cause You Stress?

[Day 04] The Flip Side (piefed-media.feddit.online)

The Flip Side

Today let's take a closer look at the flip side of yesterday's topic. I think it's a good idea to balance the things that we write about in our journals. One day might be about people that we need to keep at arm's length, and the next about the people that we don't have any limits on.

Hopefully this will be the first of the days when we get to do some compare and contrast.

Day Four Prompt

Do you have a ride-or-die friend? Is there someone in your life you know you can depend on when you need them? Is there someone that will tell you the hard truths when you need to hear them? Is this person someone you are still in frequent contact with, or is it someone that you haven't seen or heard from for a while?

There are plenty of things that we can examine when we look at our friendships. This is just one of the things about our friends that is good to reflect on.

Who Is Your Best Friend? How Did You Meet? Why Are They Your Best Friend?

[Day 03] The First Weekend (piefed-media.feddit.online)

The First Weekend

Weekends can be an interesting conundrum for people. While some of us are totally homebodies that have no problem setting limits, some of us are more actively engaged. This is the first time that you might have to think about how to go about integrating journal-writing into your weekend activities.

Day Three Prompt

Do you find yourself always saying "yes" to everything? Do you think there are people that take advantage of you for being willing to do things with or for them at the drop of a hat? Does your boss at work depend on your because they know you will get something done, even if it means you have to make personal sacrifices?

All of these, and certainly many other reasons, might make this an appropriate prompt for you:

What Boundary Do You Want to Draw for Yourself this Year?

[Day 02] Easing Into The Routine (piefed-media.feddit.online)
submitted 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) by Unattributed@feddit.online to c/nanowrimo2@feddit.online

Welcome Back to Journaling January 2026

I hope things went well yesterday. Heading into this new year with a (hopefully) long weekend will give you some time to work on getting used to writing daily (if you aren't already). But more to the point, just getting to the point of sitting down and figuring out what to write is a major part of journaling.

Hopefully, these prompts will help you along the way.

But, if you want something different, there are a ton of lists of prompts out there for you to chose from:

So, if you find that one (or more) of the prompts that I am posting here doesn't work for you, maybe there will be something in one of these other lists that will work for you.

Day Two Prompt

This is something that I think about from time to time...but especially at the beginning of a new year. Sometimes there is someone that I've met and interacted with a lot over the last year or several years, and they have done or said something that made me look up to them.

Who Do You Look up to and Why?

Note: These prompts are being supplied as a completely optional item for you to use, if you are stuck on what to write. In fact, you might want to use one of these early prompts later in the month if you get stuck.

I've attempted to look this up, and have a rough estimation of how many pages can be recommended. For a standard journal size that's college ruled, it depends on what one does for their journals. For single-spaced sorts of deals, it's around 500-600 words. As for a regular-style double-spaced deal, it's 250-300 words, from what I found. It can be around 100-500 words as an average, so about 750-900 words should be a good target.

Now, this can be a guideline, which is quite malleable when you think about it for a second. I just wrote over 1k today as a result of this, considering that I'm just the type of guy who will sit down and just do stuff.

Recap

  • Single-spaced: 500-600 words
  • Double-spaced: 250-300 words
  • Target: 750-900 words all things considered, but can be adjusted if necessary

What is This All About?

Exactly as the title says. I thought I might as well do this, considering the fact I've always been wanting to make an audiobook, and this was the way I wanted to do it. Why not I give the list of the tools I'm using in order to do this?

Tools Being Used

  • Obsidian
    • Purpose: Tool used to write Foxing Society, which is my FediWriMo project
  • Ardour
    • Purpose: DAW being used to record myself reading this (hopefully) masterpiece of literature
  • Ollama + AnythingLLM
    • Purpose: To aid in revision of my project, with a human touch, so I can let it flow while keeping my voice, prose, style, tense, etc. in check. Since I never used generative AI for this FediWriMo, it was only fair that I did something about using gen AI for assistance of my writing.

Why Post About This?

It's about documenting what I'm doing with my projects, as I fully intend on making this type of thing available. While I may have some of the craziest claims from the reading I've done (mostly outside of mainstream sources for almost anything), fiction is likely how I'll be able to get across why I do what I do, and of course, literature in general might be my way of doing things.

This is a living post, just like the other one I have on digital writing tools, so more will be added as I add some parts of the workflow together.

Welcome to Journaling January 2026

On this first day of 2026 we start a new adventure. One that will hopefully be rewarding, even if you do struggle from time to time.

Day One Prompt

Being the first day of 2026, this seemed to me to be the most appropriate prompt.

What is your personal goal for this new year?

Intro

As we get closer to the start of Journaling January here's the information you need.

TrackBear

I've added a document to the wiki on How To Set Up TrackBear for this (or any other FediWriMo) event.

To complete your setup, you will need the leaderboard Join code: 257ef994-e7d6-4de0-a847-a6e15cf8ed6d

Journaling Overview

I've also added a rather lengthy document regarding Journaling that I hope will answer questions for folks that have not journaled before. Of course, it may also cause mass confusion... But, always take the most simple answer. Here's the document:

An Introduction To Journaling

Closing

A final note: I'm in the process of restructuring the Wiki, but it will remain usable while I am working on it. Currently, it has an index page that is a bit of a place-holder, but all the information that was linked on the sidebar previously is now in the Wiki Index.

Thanks for participating in Journaling January. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here in the community, or open a chat with me and I will be happy to assist you if I can.

For those who want to use Obsidian in a local-first writing environment, specifically for writing fiction, here's some steps you can take to do just that:

  1. Download Obsidian

  2. Open Obsidian for the first time

  3. Select "Create" on the first menu that pops up (this is done during first-time setup)

  4. Name your vault under "Vault name"

  • I have it set as "Novel Work"
  1. Pick a location where you'll place this Obsidian vault
  • I have a dedicated place for Obsidian vaults, of which I share with Neigsendoig (my producer)
  1. Click "Create"

  2. Do everything to make it local-first

  • Turn off the "Sync" plugin, as that's unnecessary
  1. Install a theme that allows for pure left-to-right reading (if a language uses that system, like English)
  • Neigsendoig and I like to use the Zen theme, which is really nice for our needs
  1. Enable the Community plugins, and install the following:
  • Dictionary
  • File Info Panel
  • Harper (spell checker that's like LanguageTool, but local-only)
  • Highlightr
  • Longform (this is how you can write novels, plus you have word count goals if ever you wanted to utilize them)
  • Quiet Outline
  • Style Settings (This is required for changing up the Zen theme)
  1. Create the following folder-bases structure (this is crucial for finding things)
  • Exercises
    • This is where I put my FediWriMo project, Foxing Society
  • Fanfics
    • If you write fanfiction, I'd recommend placing it in a separate folder so you can easily access it away from your main stuff
  • Ghost Writing
    • This is desired if you have a ghost writing career, and you want to keep things different
      • That depends on what type of work, so make folders according to that
  • Ideas
    • This is where you store your ideas
  • On Hold
    • This is for projects where you just can't work on them for the time being
  • Original Projects
    • This is for stuff you work on outside of a WriMo deal, the one where you don't need to write something with 50k words in 30 days
  • z_Dictionary
    • This is where you store a local dictionary, though I don't have that, as I use Wordbook both as a dictionary and thesaurus

Now, to make a Longform project:

  1. Choose the folder you want to do something in

  2. Right click from inside the folder

  3. Select "Create Longform Project"

  4. Choose either a Multi-scene project (ordered notes combined together in the manuscript, with an index and YAML frontmatter)

  • An enclosing folder will be created for the project and scenes thereof, though it can be renamed, both folder and/or index file

  • Else, you can choose a Single-scene projct, which entails a short story or essay, including its YAML frontmatter used by Longform to track the project locally

  1. Name the project

  2. Select "Create" once it's named

  3. Once inside the project, you should have the icon with an open book selected. This is your Longform sidebar

  4. Write the title of a scene

  • I used N - "Chapter title", where N is the number of a chapter, and "Chapter title" is the title of the chapter
    • Example from Foxing Society: 1 - Turning the Tides on Corruption
  1. You can just write, like that, once this is done

In the settings, under Settings > Community Plugins > Longform > Word Counts & Sessions, you can turn on "Show word counts in status bar", which shows the note's project, "Start new writing sessions each day", which allows you to automatically start a new writing session, "Notify on goal reached", which is self-explanatory, and "Count deletions against goal", wherein deleting words counts as negative words written.

Your "Session word count goal" option is where you input the amount of words you want to write in a given session. It can be 1,667 per day, or more (for a FediWriMo exercise).

If you have any questions, feel free to DM me privately, or respond here, and I can see what I can do to answer in a timely manner (If I see it, that is).

Exactly as described. I decided upon this particular passage from Chapter 7:

"As Katsumi and his horse arrived, he got off the horse, and hitched it to a specialized wagon. This wagon had a house hitch made by the fox folk, which was designed for transporting houses. These were all tiny houses, for which was the homesteading fox's house type of choice. Once everything was hitched together, and Katsumi placed everything he needed to keep his wealth in the wagon, he climbed onto his horse again and rode off. He then rode to meet up with Katso-kun and Misagi at the place of what was now their old homestead. Once everyone had everything they needed together, the three of them embarked on a journey only Methuselah could have even called for, knowing the prophecy that a leigon would be circling around them. Once that legion circled around, this was the Abomination of Ruin, of which they knew was coming. They prepared for this the night prior, so being able to do something like this on short notice was a small feat to these fox folk, but numerous humans would not understand as to why.

During the day, the three of them kept riding on their horses, single-file, with Katsumi at the front. Katso-kun and Misagi knew by now that Katsumi was a Silent Prophet, and that he seemingly knew the way. They did not realize, however, that Katsumi had to leave it to the Creator, and likely Methuselah, to lead the way. Katsumi would only go where he was called, and so would Misagi and Katso-kun. Within a short time frame, the three of them found a spot to stop for the night as the sun had set. A day always ended at sunset for the fox folk who followed a lunisolar calendar, of which Katsumi would always follow. Misagi and Katso-kun ended up following Katsumi's lead, as this was something they had missed when reading the set-apart texts for the fox folk. This was hard to do unless one knew who to go to for a teacher. Katsumi, to Katso-kun and Misagi, was that teacher they probably were incognizant of, whom they so desperately needed all those years ago. Katsumi, on the other hand, did not understand that yet, but he was starting to get the gist of it.

As the three of them rested for the night, Katsumi looked up at the moon to see what it was doing. Thankfully, it was waning, but not enough for it to be a waning half moon yet, which would be the twenty-second of the month using this calendar. Katsumi looked at Misagi and Katso-kun, and told them, "The moon is in a waning phase, though it is not at a half moon yet. We are not too close to the twenty-second day of the month on our holy calendar yet, but we are getting there." Katsumi checked his calendar, which he had handy, to ensure he had it correct. After taking a look, it was not too close to the twenty-second, but not too far either."

Just as the title says. It's here (I used the SFW instance for it, just in case).

I'll list the tools here. Recommendations are in bold from the creators of this thing. Italics are my recommendations if any are missing. Bold italics are for community recommendations that fit a particular category. Some apps are proprietary, but there are a few like that here.

Note: This is a living post, and unless something happens, I'll keep this one updated with as much information as the community recommends if I missed anything.

So, what's everyone doing now that the competition is over? Do you have plans for your novel?

Personally, I've set mine aside for a little bit. I am: (a) looking for a better software solution (Sokio - I'm looking at Obsidian + Longform now...), (b) doing some research before I move forward (while I don't want to do hard SciFi, I want my novel to feel like a potential reality), and (c) obviously there are the upcoming holidays which means other stuff going on.

I'm hoping to get back to my novel by the end of the year, and have a real draft written sometime early next year.

So, would anyone be interested in having a “competition” based around journal writing. My thought is that I always intend to start keeping a journal at the beginning of the year. And, I do it for a few days, before setting it aside as something that I just don’t have the time for.

If you are in a similar situation, how about having a competition starting on January 1st, 2026? This would be different from the Novel Writing competition. My proposed guidelines are fairly simple: 100 pages in 31 days.

What is a page? That’s somewhat subjective, but I’d say that should be at least an A5 sheet of paper (148 x 210 mm). Word count should be ~350 words per page.

You can use whatever you want: a paper journal, an eInk device, or any other note-taking device. (Phone, tablet, computer, whatever).

If there’s enough interest, I’ll set up a leader board in TrackBear where we can track our progress, and schedule an event for the community.

(Note: this is a re-post. I didn't realize that polls won't federate to Lemmy... So, please "vote" below with a comment.)

The milestone had been marked. 50,174 is the official word count for my novel, and all I did was write what turned out to be an epilogue, since I wanted a plot twist by the end of the final chapter (Chapter 13 for me here).

The End of the 1st FediWriMo (piefed-media.feddit.online)

While there are still a few hours to go, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated in this first FediWriMo.

The image in this post is the certificate that participants are receiving upon completion of the competition.

(Aside: I would schedule this post to go out at midnight CST like have for all the others, but it appears that Lemmy instances were seeing the posts before they were scheduled...so no point in scheduling this one.)

I wanted to get some experiences from both sides, though I'll give my experience as a pantser.

I've always been a spontaneous kinda guy, though my producer tends to be very meticulous in his planning (he uses numerology to do plan releases of his major works). Despite our spontaneity, I tend to be more of a guy who just pulls a lot of shenanigans off in the first place. For me, personally speaking, it makes sesne for me to have something in my head and go off of that.

Pantsing tends to help me with a ton, and I mean a ton of plot twists that could help, and tiny plot armor if and/or when needed. For example, towards the end of my work, my protagonist is finally able to do what he was meant to do (which I won't spoil here). I will say, however, that he was meant to do this, but he was in an area he couldn't due to how persecuted he was to begin with. I can say similar with how Neigsendoig (my producer) writes, considering the fact that we tend to just have ideas that we want to make into reality (watch The Survival Podcast Ep. 3688 if you want to know where I got that from).

Regardless, that's my quick notes on my pantsing experience. What do y'all tend to do when writing? Pants or Plot? No competition is intended, just me wanting to know both sides of it out of curiosity.
