In Blackshirts and Reds, Parenti also talks about how East German officials who prosecuted collaborators were, after reuinfication, held liable to West German laws that made their earlier rulings illegal.
From the footnote on page 83:

Helene Heymann, who had been imprisoned during the Hitler regime for her anti-Nazi activities, later was a judge in the GDR, where she presided over anti-sabotage trials. She was put on trial in 1996. When her conviction was read out, it was pointed out by the judge that an additional factor against her was that she was trained by a Jewish lawyer who had been a defense attorney for the Communists and Social Democrats.

Need to get around to finishing Liberalism, but Losurdo has been a big influence on my worldview the past couple years. Reading his works is like a breath of fresh air. I hope Henry and Salvatore (or others!) can do some more translation work, because more people need to read his stuff.

The framing of China and Chinese people as some puzzle or enigma to be figured out and analyzed is so bizarre. Some choice quotes:

There's still some reverence for the U.S. in a way as a country that is, first of all, richer than China on a per capita basis, and secondly, has freedoms that China doesn't have.

I was discussing politics this weekend with a friend/coworker and we got to discussing McCarthy. My friend asserted that years after the fact it was proven that there were actually quite a few Soviet spies or informants in the US, and that McCarthy was at least sort of right on that front.

I honestly could believe this, but I'm a bit more skeptical than my friend. I've looked into it a bit, and learned of the Venona Papers which implicated the Rosenbergs. Is there any other "hard" evidence of the scale of Soviet espionage in the US during the red scare? Or anything to point me in a fruitful direction?
