Ugh. Hank Green just posted a 1-hour interview with Nate Soares about That Book. I'm halfway through on 2x speed and so far zero skepticism of That Book's ridiculous premises. I know it's not his field but I still expected a bit more from Hank.

A YouTube comment says it better than I could:

Yudkowsky and his ilk are cranks.

I can understand being concerned about the problems with the technology that exist now, but hyper-fixating on an unfalsifiable existential threat is stupid as it often obfuscates from the real problems that exist and are harming people now.

I just wanted to lob a sneer at this article fawning over Sora 2: https://spyglass.org/soras-slop-hits-different/

And again, a lot of this stuff — slop or not — is funny. Really, truly funny. Sora is scaling comedy in a way that we’ve never seen.

did this motherfucker just try to say "scaling comedy"? If you ever wondered why techbros are so unfunny, here's something to point at.

were you not paying attention or have you already forgotten that Honey is scamming the very content creators who shilled it (and others) by hijacking their affiliate links via cookie stuffing? By using Honey you're actively fucking over people who get income from affiliate marketing.

I worked at one of the biggest AI companies and their internal AI question/answer was dogshit for anything that could be answered by someone with a single fold in their brain. Maybe your co has a much better one, but like most others, I'm gonna go with the smooth brain hypothesis here.

"safe for work" means something very different when your work is basically smell-testing your own flatulence at the behest of Peter Thiel.

best we can do is 100 free chatgpt queries per month. If you can't make a living from that you need to catch up.

Nope, actually this used to work but the genius computer scientists at Boeing put the cockpit in a random place around the cabin, thwarting most pilot overwrite attacks.

It's pretty on-brand for a techbro to search for answers in what they see as "the code" (genome) while ignoring the entire rest of the fucking world.

huh, I looked into the LLM for compression thing and I found this survey CW: PDF which on the second page has a figure that says there were over 30k publications on using transformers for compression in 2023. Shannon must be so proud.

edit: never mind it's just publications on transformers, not compression. My brain is leaking through my ears.

Ben Gomes is the counterfactual. I get the feeling you didn't actually read anything.

You have a lot of growing up to do.

It's a narrative whose connection with reality is hard to discern

If only there were email communications that all but prove the allegations.

One could instead say enshittification is an emergent and often unstoppable force, carried out by whoever happens to be in place at the time.

Yeah sure, and you can keep pissing into the ocean while you're at it while real people try to fix the problems they perceive.

All roads tend to lead to the same place.

Hopefully that's a place where no one has to read bizarrely dismissive drive-by comments made by people who have No Fucking Clue about what they're talking about and lack any kind of intellectual spine.

It must be so exhausting to carry water for a settler-colonial ethnostate whose very foundations are genocidal violence.
