When in doubt, just attribute it to Winston Churchill. Wait...

Watched this last time it was posted here. Great movie, highly underrated. It helps to think of it as an indie thriller. Unfortunately it was released right at the same time as the original Star Wars plus its name "Sorcerer" isn't very informative, so the audiences didn't turn out for it.

My favorite scene is where they're driving this truck on a very dangerous mission, and they come across this native guy and his family walking on the road. Then the native guy just decides to mess with them for no apparent reason other than the lulz.

my new pfp?

FACT: every Latino family has a goofy person like that, I'm currently trying out for the position.

Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, August 10, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.

How to watch the movie:

...serves as a direct sequel to Godzilla (1954), ignoring the events of every other installment in the series (albeit briefly referencing the 1998 American film). Chiharu Niiyama stars as a reporter covering the story of Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Baragon defending Japan from Godzilla, an undead creature possessed by the souls of those killed during the Pacific War.
...
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack received mostly positive critical reviews.[27] It was awarded the Excellence/Silver Award at the 40th Golden Gross Awards [ja].[28] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 65% of 17 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.80/10.[29]

Katsuhito Itō of Hobby Japan felt the film is the best kaiju movie since the original 1954 Godzilla film.[30] Troy Guinn of Eccentric Cinema gave the film a score of 8 out of 10, calling it "one of only three Godzilla films I would recommend to anyone besides giant monster-movie fans or sci-fi buffs, the other two being the original Gojira [sic] and Mothra vs. Godzilla."[31] Bryan Byun of DVD Verdict gave it a positive review, calling it "one of the most exciting entries in Godzilla's long cinematic history."[32] Stomp Tokyo gave the film a score of 3 out of 5, calling it "one of the better-looking entries in the series, albeit one of unfulfilled potential."

I remember back in the 90s, my crush one day asked me if I wanted to go see a concert. I was like: yeah! But they didn't mention that they also invited their ex. So not only was it kinda awkward (the ex was far cooler than me) but I don't even remember who the band was, all I remember is they were trying to sound like NIN and not succeeding.

The first alt concert that I really enjoyed was His Name is Alive which I guess is "experimental rock, dream pop"... anyway I remember sitting in the "under 21" section and thinking the music was really good... It was a fairly small venue too, the acoustics were great...

Convergence is a long-running convention/meetup of (mostly) internet goths. It's going on this weekend in Denver, USA. There's an associated series of Twitch DJ sets (called a "raid train") going on all weekend. Quality varies, but it's a chance to check out a bunch of DJs playing "darkwave, goth, deathrock, EBM, industrial, synthpop, dark electro, synthwave, 80s/90s, goth metal, postpunk, etc."

“As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean.”

Iron Maiden fans will recognize this line from Rime of the Ancient Mariner. (timestamp!)

Mina needs to stop worrying about that loser and just be happy with her "roommate", who is clearly distressed by the idea of getting married to some guy.

In DRACULA MEETS THE SPARTANS the guy at the helm is the Spartan leader, who made a deal whereby Dracula took the Spartans he killed and made them undead, in exchange for the living Spartans agreeing to work for Dracula. After he crashes the ship he jumps off and when the villagers run up to him, he's like: sorry about the landing, it's my first time driving a ship. There's also a scene earlier where one of the Spartans is climbing those ropes up in the masts trying to figure out how to tackle the starboard keelhaul (or whatever) during the storm and he gets blown off the ship, turns into a bat, and flies back.

It may be imagined that the length of the two-handed falx allowed it to be wielded with great force, the point piercing helmets and the blade splitting shields – it was said to be capable of splitting a shield in two at a single blow. Alternatively, it might have been used as a hook, pulling away shields and cutting at vulnerable limbs, or striking the edge of a strong shield. The inward curving point was still able to pierce the armour or flesh of the target behind the shield, rendering even the most reinforced shields much less effective against a falx wielder.
...
Marcus Cornelius Fronto described the large gaping wounds that a falx inflicted, and experiments have shown that a blow from a falx easily penetrated the Romans' lorica segmentata, enough to incapacitate or kill a majority of opponents. These experiments also show that the falx was most efficient when targeting the head, shoulders, legs and especially the right (sword) arm, which was generally exposed. A legionary who had lost the use of his right arm became a serious liability to his unit in battle.
...
At the time of the Dacian wars, producing a long, sharp blade was technically challenging.[citation needed] As such, it might be that the larger two-handed falx was a high-status weapon and used only by the best warriors.[citation needed]

The Raven (1963) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, August 3, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC

How to watch the movie:

a 1963 American comedy Gothic horror film produced and directed by Roger Corman. The film stars Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff as a trio of rival sorcerers. The supporting cast includes Jack Nicholson as the son of Lorre's character.
...
Bosley Crowther of The New York Times panned the film as "comic-book nonsense ... Strickly [sic] a picture for the kiddies and the bird-brained, quote the critic."[10] Variety wrote that while Poe "might turn over in his crypt at this nonsensical adaptation of his immortal poem", Corman nevertheless "takes this premise and develops it expertly as a horror-comedy."[11] The Chicago Tribune called it "fairly thin fare, made up mostly of camera tricks, and some very obviously false scenery, but Peter Lorre's performance is mildly entertaining. Youngsters may find it fun."[12] A generally positive review in The Monthly Film Bulletin wrote that the film "starts off with the inestimable advantage of a script which not only makes it amply clear from the outset that [Corman] is cheerfully and wholeheartedly sending himself up, but manages to do it wittily." Its main criticism was a "long central section" of the film that drags until things pick up again for the final duel.[13] Peter John Dyer of Sight & Sound wrote, "Richard Matheson's script, a good deal more tenuous than its predecessors in the Corman-Poe canon, at least treats its actors generously to props, incantations and quotable lines ... A pity the equation doesn't always add up; there's too much slack, due perhaps to an imbalance between the comedy, which runs riot, and the horror, which trails behind in the wake of previous Corman films."[14] ...

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 88% based on reviews from 17 critics, with an average rating of 6.8 out of 10.

Bonus comic:

MaryDeath is a comic about life, death, and everything in between. The story follows a young girl named Mary who happens to have befriended Death. Why Death has chosen to take interest in Mary remains a mystery, but despite his ever dark presence Mary finds comfort in his companionship.

https://www.marydeathcomics.com/archives/comic/

MaryDeath Comics was created in the 2010s by Gwen Tarpley. The artist transitioned recently, but it seems they don’t mind their deadname being on their older comics (i.e. some of the recent posts still use it on their Cats Cafe comic, which is their main effort now.)
