I would be curious to know how e-commerce would change though as without ads people would likely gravitate to the big box stores

Do they need to advertise? At the moment we still have search engines, although not for long, but remove the marketing crap and companies can go back to fighting over offering the best prices/services.

I rarely see ads and yet I can still manage to buy the products I want, I just don’t buy much branded crap because it’s overpriced and has been enshitified by greed. People just need to stop buying into marketing bs and go back to buying what you need!

Sadly everything is designed to manipulate the gullible so I doubt there’ll be any meaningful change in my lifetime since it seems to be 60-70% of the population that falls under the gullible tag.

I mean, the rich are benefiting from all the ad spending which is all that matters! /s

People really need to remember that you're paying for the ads regardless of if you see them. The only people who lose out are those who show the ads and giving the amount of websites these days that are solely built around showing ads, I really have no sympathy for them.

The bigger question no-one seems to ask is, how much cheaper would products be if they weren't spending trillions on ads in the first place?

I can't comment on ZimaOS but I do use CasaOS to manage docker and it saves a lot of hassle for most things. Just being able to click the 3 dots and check for updates is worth it.

The only issue I have with CasaOS is that it doesn't have support for env files. Maybe ZimaOS fixed that. Next week I should have a HP gen9 arriving to replace my dying gen8 and looking at trying proxmox on that so might have to test ZimaOS.

Still really want to get into kubernetes but trying to get a useful tutorial that works and isn't a stupid video thats hard to follow is annoyny.

Sadly Meshtastic is limited to the number of nodes it'll go through (think it was 7) so pretty limited. MeshCore goes up to something like 64 so is better but still both have huge limitations right now besides the 'no nodes around me' issue.

still, I have some MeshCore nodes and hopefully get 1 fairly high up when I can afford the £100 to buy it but its a lot to waste when no-one around here is interested.

I have multiple PI’s waiting for a decent ‘non video’ PI kubernetes tutorial but its hard to find anything beyond setting up a cluster and running hello world or aren’t out of date and no longer work. I already have a 12 pi bitnami cluster but its a pain to manage.

Something showing how to run things like JellyFin with network share for media would cover much of what is needed for Self Hosting.

Bonus points for things like TalosOS would be cool but then it seems net booting TalosOS is difficult because you needed a specific serial thats only easily viewable in Omni right now so still needs SD cards/SSD/NVME hats so increases costs significantly.

I’ve been trying to get a tutorial done myself but keep hitting issues with configs not working as expected. sigh

Its also not free lol

I’m broke and no way am I paying for something to help me not be broke. It just always confuses me how everything these days is over thought rather than K.I.S.S.

I think I belong in some other universe! 😞

All I want is software that I can put DD’s and known regulars in and it can tell me how much I’ll have in 3 or 6 months time.

I’ve tried firefly, actual budget and most of the docker based ones but still stuck using the forecast app on the ipad.

They’re all just way to over complicated for what anyone I know wants and given how AI can’t get the simplest things right, I’d rather someone just work on simplicity that works, like microsoft money didn’t before they killed it. 🙄😕

Ooh, Onedr0p's cluster template looks great so tried it but getting stuck on RPI_EFI.fd

The notes say: create RPI_EFI.fd like here https://www.sidero.dev/v0.6/guides/rpi4-as-servers/#persisting-changes

But that requires setting up sidero which is discontinued and looks like it needs a working talos cluster to get it working anyway, so is there an easier way to generate RPI_EFI.fd ?

I’m also hitting other issues so going to have to wipe the pi I have for PXE anyway so maybe it’ll play nice after a reset. 🤔

[rant] The Internet is not FREE. Its just free at the point of use!

Just like ad funded websites aren’t free to use, they are also just free at the point of use!

People seem to forget where the all this ‘ad money’ comes from. It’s not growing on magic money trees, it’s coming from every product you buy and it’ll be interesting to see how much products have gone up against the sheer amount of ads that are shovelled everywhere now.

The reason the internet used to be great was because people shared information with no expectation of monetary gain. Just the love of what they knew and the joy of sharing information.

So the sooner everyone realises you’re all paying for the ads on every product/service to be shown already, and blocking them actually saves you money because the more ads that are shown, the more websites get paid, the more ad/tracking companies charge companies and yes, the more expensive you’re product and services get! Ok, so I’ve tried a few open source apps for tracking money and they’re either too complicated, a hassle to setup or don’t use mysql/mariadb so would require setting up PostgreSQL 😖

I’m currently using forecast for the iPad which is great but I’m trying to wean myself off Apple giving they’re going to shit too and find all the docker versions I’ve got working are too complicated /faff to use and seem to focus on what you’ve already spent.

So anyone have suggestions for: Simple docker setup Mysql if it won’t do flat file 3 month future forecasting based on recurring transaction

I don’t care what I’ve spent, I want to know, based on the recurring transaction, what my balance is over the next 3 months, so I know if i have spare money to spend/save.

Seems a lot of budgeting apps miss that somehow. 🤨

——— Edit: theres a lot of replies to sort through but thanks to everyone for responding.

I’ve done spreadsheets but it’s still a hassle to setup and I have enough going on to be faffing about trying to learn graphs which is what i’d really like.

I’ve also tried a lot that are listed on https://selfh.st/ but even actualbudget doesn’t seem to be able to forecast unless i’m missing something?

DollarDollar seems interesting but requires postgras and actualbudget seems nice but unless i’m missing something still can’t show future cashflow even if you add something as recurring?

Seems odd that all these apps offer tons of features for what you’ve already spent but nothing for how much you have to spend over the next 2-3 months which is all i care about. 😕

Or you give the shares to people, but the company would still need to be managed by someone who no longer has a proportional incentive to make it succeed, causing the same result as if it was government run.

Would it? Give the shares to the workers and they have a huge incentive to run a company well. Right now a CEO’s only priority is to maximise shareholders return. A workers led company would maximise both shareholder return AND have an incentive and pride in doing a job properly instead of the low morale and poorly built crap we have today.

History has shown anytime control is in the hands of the few, it’s run into the ground in order to maximise the wealth for the few so giving control to the masses of workers in companies would lead to more compromises and might sound bad at first but would likely work better the more people required to make drastic changes.

And as said many times, no billionaire has ever ‘earned’ that. They’ve all gained it through exploitation and wage theft either directly or indirectly!

I have no idea if its possible since I have an ‘06 Audi but look into VCDS or VAGCOM. They are technically the same software but it allows you to enable features through the OBD2 port. If you look round the Audi forums, they often have maps showing people who have the dongle/software needed.

Since I have my own dongle/software, I only needed to replace the indicator lever (£15 on ebay) and change 2 settings in the ECU and I had cruise control working and you can change a ton of other stuff on the car.
