“The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is in the midst of repairing and resurfacing the I-5 upper bridge deck — replacing aging concrete and expansion joints, improving drainage, and addressing other long-deferred maintenance. With this work has come gridlock, heightened driver stress and aggression, and a collective “grit and bear it” approach to traveling in and through Seattle.

“The impacts are everywhere. Travel times on I-5 north and south have ballooned. City streets are clogged with drivers inching toward on-ramps. And that congestion is spilling over into increasingly unhinged motorist behavior: racing through residential neighborhoods, driving into oncoming lanes, forcing their way into the front of lines, running red lights, and speeding to claw back lost time.

“But did it have to be this way?

“Seattleites overwhelmingly support policies to cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce traffic violence, and lessen our dependence on cars. The multi-year maintenance project known as Revive I-5 should have been a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shift trips away from single-occupancy vehicles and toward transit, walking, rolling, and biking.”

Isn’t ICE in danger of running into the wall of its own insanely-inspired racist agenda? Or does it have total immunity/impunity to do as it will until the republic sputters into its bloody demise?

Hundreds of counterprotesters on Saturday drowned out a far-right activist’s attempt to hold a small rally in support of the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

Conservative influencer Jake Lang organized an anti-Islam, anti-Somali and pro-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) demonstration, saying on social media beforehand that he intended to “burn a Quran” on the steps of City Hall

A broad coalition of labor organizations and community advocates are coming together to launch a campaign aimed at raising taxes on the ultrawealthy.

In a press briefing on Thursday, organizers outlined their plan to pressure state governments to enact a “Tax the Rich” agenda aimed at mitigating the harms done by the Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which in the coming years is set to take an axe to funding for programs such as Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), while showering corporations and the wealthy with more tax cuts.

Two protesters have been blinded by so-called “less-lethal” munitions deployed by federal officers during an anti-ICE protest last week in Santa Ana, California, according to reports.

The blindings come amid rising scrutiny of federal authorities’ use-of-force policies, after the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer set off nationwide protests.

There are lots of reasons to dismantle ICE. There’s a functional argument: We do not need ICE to enforce immigration laws; the U.S. handled this just fine for 227 years prior to the creation of this specific agency. There’s a fiscal argument: ICE is now larger than every other federal law enforcement agency combined. It’s larger than the militaries of all but 15 countries in the world! It’s annual budget, $37.5 billion, could pay for the health insurance of every needy child in the country!

But the core reason for abolishing ICE is that it poses a structural threat to American democracy.

19

[Minnesota state representative Michael Howard], who represents Richfield…said he had spoken to both of the people who were detained and criticized what he called an ICE “rampage across Minnesota” in the wake of Good’s killing.

“In Richfield, federal agents, including Greg Bovino, senior commander of US Border Patrol, entered Target without a warrant, physically assaulted, and arrested two Target employees, both US citizens,” [Representative Howard] said in an update to his webpage.

28

Last Wednesday, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old American mother. Already, the federal investigation into the killing raises serious concerns, which is why the parallel investigation Minnesota officials are conducting is vital.

Mere hours after Good’s death, the Trump administration prejudged the case before any investigation could begin. The administration was swift to blame the victim, with the president and the DHS secretary making disparaging, accusatory, and prejudicial statements about her motives and conduct

A week away from open enrollment ending in most states, 17 GOP members of the US House of Representatives helped Democrats pass a bill to restore lapsed Affordable Care Act premium tax credits—but senators have declined to act with that same urgency, and the deadline for many Americans to make coverage decisions for 2026 is Thursday.

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), a lead negotiator for a bipartisan Senate group working on a compromise for the expired ACA subsidies, told Politico on Tuesday that the legislative text will no longer be ready this week. Instead, it’s now expected the last week of January—after not only the upper chamber’s upcoming recess, but also when millions of people nationwide will have already had to choose a plan on an ACA marketplace or to forgo health insurance coverage due to surging premiums.

As President Trump threatens Iran, Venezuela, Mexico, Greenland and more, renowned historian Alfred McCoy says the United States is “an empire in decline,” following a predictable pattern of militarism abroad and political instability at home as it loses power and influence on the world stage. “American politics become increasingly contorted and irrational,” says McCoy. “I think the thing to do is to realize that we are an empire in decline, … and it will continue for another decade or two, until American power finally slips away.”

38

Lies that go unopposed tend to stick, and the rewriting of the history of January 6 demonstrates that Trumpists will be relentless in making everyone repeat them, as they become part of a political loyalty test. Impeachment is one way of creating a truthful record.

A Kentucky woman is facing multiple criminal charges after she allegedly induced her own abortion using medication.

Trump’s reckless action should finally lay to rest his always misleading characterisation of himself as a “global peacemaker”.

21

On the first day of a trial scrutinizing Seattle's actions during 2020's racial justice protests, a lawyer for the family of 16-year-old Antonio Mays Jr., who was killed at the Capitol Hill Organized Protest, argued that he died because Seattle police, paramedics and emergency officials failed to respond appropriately after he was shot.
