Ad Riven. I read all the novels, too!

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

I’ve been reporting them. It seems that a lot of the posts contain affiliate links, so it’s someone trying to make money from that - not because they wrote the books that are getting posted.

Some have been banned, but they keep coming back. Some may be bots, but not all - I saw at least one come back with a hateful response when called out.

“ Suddenly the great beast beat its hideous wings, and the wind of them was foul. Again it leaped into the air, and then swiftly fell down upon Éowyn, shrieking, striking with beak and claw.

Still she did not blench: maiden of the Rohirrim, child of kings, slender but as a steel-blade, fair yet terrible. A swift stroke she dealt, skilled and deadly. The outstretched neck she clove asunder, and the hewn head fell like a stone. Backward she sprang as the huge shape crashed to ruin, vast wings outspread, crumpled on the earth; and with its fall the shadow passed away.

A light fell about her, and her hair shone in the sunrise.”

I have several Tolkien prints by Angela Rizza (purchased on etsy), and this is one of my favorites.

As someone who once put some tortillas on the griddle, turned to the fridge to get cheese, and…walked right out of the room and back to my desk, I 100% agree. I sometimes feel dumb that I am literally setting 1 or 2 minute timers, but it’s better than burning stuff. I don’t always need them, but they are really helpful during times of stress when I’m especially preoccupied with other things.

This book is long out-of-print, although used copies do not seem that hard to come by. I checked this book out from the library dozens of times in the early 90s.

The miniatures in this book are wonderful, and there are no shortcuts. She teaches how to carve sandstone for a fireplace, dip candles, solder copper for copper pans, weave baskets, and more.

We can add [email protected] to that list. I tried to report an individual post, but I’m not sure if it went through. I just got a spinning wheel when I hit submit.

You mentioned pest control in the soil - have you tried mosquito bits? I ended up mixing some in with the soil for a Monstera and I also put a layer over the top and it does seem to make a difference. I do have to combine it with those unsightly yellow sticky traps, though. Between plants and the inverts I keep, my house is full of containers of damp dirt.

In case anyone is thinking about getting a katchy, you can read the reviews, but I give it a thumbs-down. I used it only a few times before fall and it worked okay, but when I pulled it out again in the spring I just get orange error lights and no response when I reached out to them.

Sweet, thanks for letting me know. I’ll hang tight until it gets fixed then.

I noticed a few weeks ago that I had been made a moderator of [email protected], which was not something I asked for. I assumed it was a mistake, so I clicked “leave the mod team”. A week later I was a mod again, so I left again. I noticed it again tonight, but when I tried to leave it didn’t do anything.

In the mod log it shows my attempts to leave, but in the photo I’ve attached it shows that I am removing someone else. I don’t think that person was ever a moderator, but there seem to be some wires crossed somewhere. Can someone help me out? Thanks.

7/28/23 - I noticed there had been a new release, so I tried again and was able to remove myself successfully this time.

Genuine suggestion made by my iOS photos app. Don’t ask why I have Frodo Baggins as an identified person.

Brachypelma auratum a few days after she molted. I usually leave the molts in with my tarantulas for a while to see what they will do with them. Stashing them in the water dish is very popular and it is always hilarious. This spider tends to ignore them, so I will pull it out soon and add to my collection (the one I usually hide when I have guests).

I don’t think that spider is even as big as the author seems to think it is. She seems to have taken the 10 cm leg length and applied that to each leg, when it’s really the approximate diagonal leg span. I went and found the paper describing that new genus/species and the longest leg length measured was just over 2 inches. So they are big spiders, but not the monsters she seems to think they are. I guess I also don’t care for spider size comparison to spheres because it implies a volume that they just don’t have and it feels like sensationalism to me.

If you’re talking about speech, I think you’re talking about the “mid-Atlantic” accent, although that fell off earlier than 2000. It was a fake upper-class accent actors were trained in. I don’t know much more than that about it.

I’m looking for sunscreen recommendations - specifically for outdoor activities (hiking, etc), but if you’ve got everyday sunscreen recs, I’ll take those too. I generally prefer mineral sunscreens and I’m in the US, but feel free to share whatever sunscreens you like and hopefully others will benefit also.

Bonus points if it doesn’t burn your eyes when you get really sweaty.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago

I created a playlist of the recommendations here and thought I might as well share: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9W-RMmS6ewK9p8OtJEKXtClpXEibXEIU

I also added this video on the Boeing 737 Max from MegaProjects, and a couple on a subject near and dear to my heart: Boy Bands of the 90s:

When Corden Met Barlow and The Boy Band Con.

Thank you, that clicked it for me! Somehow I was just not getting that the coins were not cumulative, so that makes sense now.

In fact, it sounds like regular turnover actually benefits everyone, since you don’t get extra coins for staying multiple days. I feel much better! I didn’t want to be the adult that showed up and ruined everyone’s fun, but I just looked up the average age of a Pokemon Go player and it looks like I’m not actually very likely to come across many children, haha.

I just started playing Pokemon Go so I could play with my brother’s kids and I know very little.

I took over my first gym and then was wracked with guilt picturing small children crying their eyes out over their pokemon, so I started googling to see what the consensus was on player etiquette.

From what I understand, as long as a pokemon has been in a gym for 8.5 hours the owner will get the full 5o coins for the day. But I also keep seeing something about the coin reset at 12:01 and read that you shouldn’t take a gym between 11 pm and midnight and I really do not get it. Can someone enlighten me? I did see there had been changes to the game over the years so maybe the stuff I’m reading is not all up-to-date.

I think this is Hyles lineata? I don’t know a lot about moths, but the poor guy could use a lint roller.

I love animals with very basic human names. So one of my tarantulas is named Jennifer.

I saw this on birdspidersCH youtube channel. It’s a little bit of a tongue-twister for me, but it means “hairy blue” so it’s definitely descriptive.

I have an A. seemanni that has molted 3 times in my care, but she never brings the molts up to the surface. Instead, she shreds them into tiny pieces and buries all the pieces deep within her burrow. With her most recent molt, she was finally ready for a rehouse and, amazingly, I was able to recover some intact spermatheca. She is one of my favorites, so I am very pleased.

I know communities like these can get a little silly and they’re easy to make fun of, but they really do serve an important purpose, IMO. The number of people who have to be told that it’s not normal for your partner to scream at you, or that no, your partner actually isn’t a great person if they do fill in the blank is really sad to me. And for every person asking, there are certainly more lurking that can also benefit from reading that. They might have to wade through a bunch of nonsense and AI-generated stories to find it, but I’m glad there’s a place for it.
