• Preparations for the event POTUS is attending months in advance
  • Large convoy of vehicles with special equipment for transportation by land
  • Operating two exactly same and fully equipped planes for transportation by air
  • 5 inch bulletproof glass windows for the 'Beast' and the Oval Office

These are the main points I know, barring a few small ones I cannot recall at the moment or unsure about

I've only heard bits and pieces of this from friends and strangers through some specific events so far and desire to know more about it, at least that which is publicly witnessed or documented. I just mean to learn this for educational and entertainment purposes because I am genuinely intrigued with the logistics behind making these operations possible like the other topics that have been covered by Wendover Productions.

Is it true? I've been lately looking out for a new atomic distro but I've heard it seems it's not developer friendly with the sandboxing and extra efforts to get apt/rpm working. I am relatively new to Linux and stuck with Mint for now so I can't add anything to it.

Your works are nothing short of wonder. I would describe this not as another genre of memes, but a whole another dimension of shitposting only a few are able to observe and appreciate. You wield opportunities as countless as memes themselves and possess a remarkable sense of humour and talent to compose prose that introduce a entirely new perspective for the viewers. You are a living rendition of what a 19th century novelist would be were they given access to the modern day internet.

To have a priceless person as you on the fediverse is a blessing. For me to have witnessed your art is even more so.

This is splendid. Your words match the quality of dialogues from Disco Elysium. It must've feel like a true talent being able to conjure sentences with such vividness for any topic you encounter.

I feel like I could read shitposts like this for hours.

There seems to be a serious lack of a Discord equivalent fediverse platform unlike other social media alternatives. Most of the closest options are either too overwhelming in UI/UX for majority of people coming from Discord, missing deal-breaking features like video calling or are not federated.

Could it due to some technical limitation of the ActivityPub protocol? I skimmed through its documentation and I get the impression that content may not be accommodating of instant messaging without unconventional modifications. It would also be troublesome to federate massive bunch of messages across (physical) servers in real time.

If it were truly possible to create a Discord alternative, what would it take to make it compatible with the fediverse while also ensuring it feels functional and intuitive for migrating users and not pose too much of a resource drain for self hosters?

Edit: Modified title to clarify post talking about ActivityPub in particular

I'll just go with introducing IPv6 from the very start

In elaborate terms: you have the ability to change any one of the protocols, specifications, designs or standards of the above at their proposal stage or before their mass adoption. You may choose to modify or reject an existing one or create one by yourself.

Some users and I would have common ideas in mind, however I would love to see some esoteric ideas as well.

I have Pangolin set up as a reverse proxy in my VPS and Cloudflare as a DNS provider with its free tier.

I want to migrate out of Cloudflare for my setup, however I lack the requisite network knowledge to safely transition my VPS and domain to better alternatives and don't know where to start its research from.

There are two features I intend my setup to have after the transition:

  • DDoS protection: I was considering using Crowdsec as there is a guide to incorporate it into Pangolin, but I do not know if it will be sufficient or not. I saw a post earlier listing some alternative DDoS protection solutions, but I am wary of their limited free tier options compared to that of Cloudflare and I don't wish to pay for them as my homelab is mostly going to be used by me and a handful of friends.

  • Wildcard Certificate Generation: My domain provider has a poor DNS service and is not listed under LEGO's supporter DNS providers for enabling wildcard certificate generation and the Cloudflare one does not seem to work for some reason. I don't know of any other compatible DNS provider I could shift to unless it is provided within the other DDoS protection services as mentioned above.

Again, I don't have much knowledge in this field but I'm willing to learn and make an informed decision. Please let me know any suitable alternatives for the above, the pros and cons for the migrations, or some guide on performing such transition from Cloudflare as you seem fit.

Now draw her getting a Stanley cup as a present

For user-readable files or media I store them under ~/docker/data, and for everything else I store them under ~/docker/stacks/[service] where ~/docker/stacks is maintained by Dockge.

Is there a better way to do this?

Sorry I'm on mobile and cannot properly label the diagram. I've tried to include a proper alt text instead.

I tried to study a bit from beej.us and I appreciated the style of teaching, but ultimately thought it wasn't for me as it didn't go much into depth and focused more on creating C programs. Is there some source from where I can learn in a comprehensive yet easy to understand manner the fundamentals of computer networking, at least to the extent that is relevant for selfhosting?

You’ve got no choice other than to grind it out and get your shit organized.

I didn't want to believe it, but sadly it's true. It's going to take a long time for me to search for all my files, but if it's the only right way to go, then so be it.

I'm finally planning to shift my primary PC to Linux in the coming week. I want to ensure all of my data from Windows be transferred to Linux, including my personal files and application data, even if there is no native support in Linux to access it.

For context, my setup has become untidy over the years; I have two partitions :C & :D and stored personal data in each partition, plus I have created directories of my own in several odd locations which I cannot recall but they also contain some critical files. I only have a single NVMe SSD installed that is almost out of space so I cannot dualboot, although I can make use of an external HDD during the transfer. I've already had some experience in Linux by installing it in another PC immediately after purchasing it.

Is there some way to automatically prepare all my data in Windows for transfer into Linux directly or in a backup drive accessible in Linux? Please don't tell me I have to copy and paste all files by hand because given the criticality of the stored data I would rather stay in Windows than risking data loss.

Wow, a Hades AND a Disco Elysium reference!

Just like Zeus and Odysseus!

There are a few Docker projects I haven't been able to properly implement in my homelab, only because their images need to be user-compiled and Dockge doesn't seem to have an option to include the entire repository required for the project compilation in its interface or in the stacks directory. I know I could just host them in a separate directory but I would like my services to be manageable from a single place and following this approach isolates the service from being controlled from Dockge.

Is there some workaround or a solution for this I am unaware of? I initially thought I could deploy Coolify within Dockge and store the applications under it but apparently Coolify is meant to work on its own and I fear running both Coolify and Dockge will break stuff.

And I still refuse to use the 'Complete and Instant Annihilation of the Final Boss' potion since I may need it in the future.

Reading earlier comments in this community made me consider documenting the workings of my homelab to some extent, ie. docker configuration, credentials, ports and links of my services. I've tried to make it consistent and organised but it still feels half baked and insufficient. Everyone suggests documenting everything you do in your homelab but don't state how. Since I've hardly had experience running my own server, I would really appreciate observing the blueprint of some other fellow selfhoster for copying or taking inspiration from rather than considering documentation to be 'left as an exercise for the reader'.

Edit: I already have a note-taking solution with me. What I wish to ask is to know what needs to be documented and what the structure of the documentation should be to accommodate the information.

I've been following MoistCr1TiKaL for over a year, just because of his weird and creative sense of humour (not his monotonous speech) that he uses when talking about a subject or commentating on videos or games. I don't have much interest in the topic of his videos themselves but I occasionally click on some to get a few laughs just from the way he talks about them.

There's no other channel I've found that does shitposty commentary like him, or at least ones that post as regularly. Louis Rossman's rants do also entertain me to an extent, but he mostly focuses on select few issues on his channel that don't resonate with me as much. Internet Comment Etiquette with Erik is another quality channel but has a lower posting frequency.

Could you recommend me creators similar to him, preferably who can make actually decent jokes and post often? Podcasters are welcome too.

This is a brilliant idea! I was wondering whether talking subjectively would be detrimental to my point, but having it explained this way is so much better. I think the key point here is to not berate the other person for using AI in between this explanation.

[-] enchantedgoldapple@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 months ago

My question was genuine. I haven't been an avid user of generative AI when it was first released and decided against using it at all lately. I tried to use it in niche projects and was completely unreliable. Its tone of speech is bland and the way it acts as a friend feels disturbing to me. Plus the environmental destruction it is causing on such a large scale is honestly depressing to me.

All that being said, it is not easy for me to communicate these points clearly to someone the way I have experienced it. It's like the case for informing people about privacy; casual users aren't inherently aware of the consequences of using this tool and consider it a godsend. It will be difficult for them to convince that the tool they cherish to use so much is not that great after all, thus I am asking here what the beat approach should be.
