Can you make your argument without resorting to inaccurate analogies? That way we can focus on the topic instead of getting derailed.

If you're not making posts that the community members want to see, then they are justified in downvoting you so that they do their part to influence the culture of the community.

The fact that you're only targeting downvoters and not upvoters leads me to believe you want to surround yourself with yes-men instead of authentic humans.

If you think 5 people downvoting you is what's stopping your posts from gaining visibility, then you are simply incorrect. Lemmy is still very small and most communities that aren't tech or politics aren't "visible" because they lack activity.

And? Upvotes increase visibility.

Why is one bad but the other is acceptable?

It's also not an issue in "smaller communities" because there's not enough content to bury heavily-downvoted posts anyways.

Not everyone is worth engaging with.

How come you're only focusing on downvotes but not upvotes? People can give their approval without question but if they disapprove then they must explain themselves? Sounds like toxic positivity.

Video games were only lame when the business school people weren't in control.

Yeah, we've been conditioned to scoff at it so we don't recognize it when we see it.

Here's a (non-exhaustive) map of Flock cameras: https://deflock.org/

We can all do our part. Be safe and hide your identity. Leave your phones at home because they can be used to track you.

Sounds like the bottom level of some conspiracy iceberg.

I call it "trickle down rhetoric."

Essentially, people with more wealth are looked up to by people with less wealth. When a wealthy person says something, their slightly-less-wealthy peers are more likely to agree with them. When the slightly-less-wealthy peers say something, their slightly-less-wealthy peers are more likely to agree as well.

This trend keeps happening until you reach the bottom of the barrel, where just about everyone who can't think for themselves (most people) are just parroting ideas that have been put there by those with more power and influence.

It's how we can convince the working class to vote for Hillary, Trump, and Biden over Bernie.

This is why Americans drive big cars.

So when a hitman kills their target, it just looks like a regular occurrence.

I want to get as far away from the ad economy and ad culture as possible. Since there's a 0% chance the morons supporting it will ever learn from their mistakes, I'm starting to realize the only option going forward is to create new places where we aren't stuck with the "tunnel vision of the stupids."

It doesn't have to be large, start small and work our way out. It also doesn't have to be expensive. It shouldn't be too difficult to enforce a ban on physical advertisements within the borders, but digital advertising is a whole 'nother ballgame.

Even for a small town, would it be possible to sue companies for running ads in it? Similar to how the same company will show different content on their web services depending on where the user connects from to adhere to local laws. It would be fine if they just blocked connections from where advertising is illegal, but it's not okay for them to show ads to our residents.

Any insight into this besides useful idiots saying advertising is good or necessary would be greatly appreciated!

When I try to do this, the connection dialog hangs. I have PermitRootLogin yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config and I can log in as the root user using the command line with sftp root@IP, but when I try it with Dolphin it does not work.

Update: AI was able to help me solve this. I'm not quite sure what the issue is, but running this and then trying to connect solved it:ssh-keyscan -p 22 <SERVER_IP> >> ~/.ssh/known_hosts

Looking at the Linked Instances, most instances have at most a few hundred instances linked. What happens when there are thousands, or possibly even millions? Could too many instances require significantly more powerful hardware, or even be impossible altogether?
