I kind of love that about his videos. I scoff at the time, but then start the video and next thing I know it’s a half hour later and I’ve learned something in a surprising amount of depth.

I like a world where not everything needs to be 5 minute videos. Some things can be longer form.

Foie gras makes me sad. It’s usually cruel, produced by force-feeding animals. There are ways to make it humanely but they are rarely carried out.

But damn is it good. I don’t eat it anymore, but I have had it a couple of times and loved it.

That’s me. Sort of. Don’t get me wrong, my wife is rapidly running out of room in her office for all the cute animals I have printed for her (that she didn’t ask for, I just surprise her with them sometimes 😅).

But I’ve rapidly reached the stage where I want to print but have covered most of my own needs for printed stuff. So any time anyone asks if I can print something, I’m thrilled.

I guess all popes are homophonic in some languages, like in Spanish “la papa” is potato and “el papa” is pope.

You can’t put a huge ass spoiler on your 737 to have it stick better to the ground

Just to “um akshually” a bit because I found this fascinating when I learned about it ages ago.

A spoiler on a car doesn’t help it stick to the ground better. Rather it “spoils” air, reducing drag and allowing air to flow around the car better. Like damming up the air between the roof and the spoiler, allowing other air to just flow from the roof to the spoiler. This means there isn’t a vacuum created behind the cabin, so you have less turbulent air and less drag.

A wing on a car increases drag, and forces the car down to the ground by creating lift (though since the wing is upside down compared to a plane, we call this lift “downforce”).

We often use the terms “spoiler” and “wing” interchangeably when referring to cars, but they’re very different beasts!

Having a sensor means you can also trust your popcorn button. Technology Connections did a great video about this, if your microwave uses the sensor properly, the popcorn button starts by clearing the chamber of moisture by running the fan and the sensor. Then it turns on the microwave element, and when the bag inflates enough to open there’s a sudden puff of moisture into the chamber. The oven detects this, and uses a lookup to determine how much longer to run the microwave element based on how long it ran the element before sensing moisture, which accounts for different sizes and weights. You’ll hear a beep and see a few seconds left on the display.

This is nearly perfect in my experience. Every now and then the popcorn is very slightly burnt, but being able to just press a button and walk away is awesome.

Definitely watch the video, I didn’t realize mine had this feature until an earlier video of his about popcorn buttons (this one, specifically).

Earlier this morning, while reading the final Discworld novel, I came across this reference Terry Pratchett made to Monty Python. It’s not my favorite thing to come out of Monty Python, but it made me smile.

This is very common for psyche wards.

Memory wards, not psyche wards. Important difference.

A psychiatric patient would be able to read and understand the sign, and could then easily escape. A patient with Alzheimer’s or other advanced dementia cannot.
