Why do you care about how they vote? It literally doesn't matter.

I agree that voting doesn't matter in terms of making a material difference in the social hierarchy because the US is not a democracy. However, who a person votes for (or whether they vote) is an indication of their values, which are in turn an indication of their future behavior, and anyone who votes for the regime that is currently conducting a fucking genocide demonstrates either their ignorance (which it seems OP's friend cannot claim as a so-called socialist) or a fundamental lack of solidarity with those who are being dehumanized, tortured, and murdered, the victims of that genocide. It demonstrates a fundamental lack of solidarity with all oppressed peoples of the world. Just because voting doesn't matter with respect to who wins the election, it sure as hell matters on an interpersonal level.

Find it pretty funny how electoralist brainworms have infected even socialist Americans to the point that they'd think convincing someone not to vote is a useful course of action.

It has next to nothing to do with electoralism as it is only tangentially related to the election itself. Again, it is about a person's position relative to class struggle. If a member of the ruling class were murdering your family and your friend decided to throw in their support to that murderer with the rationalization that that murderer might benefit your friend more than some other murderer, it doesn't matter how inconsequential their support is - it still tells you a great deal about your friend's priorities and interests which don't actually include your dying family or other oppressed people, only themselves.

Or go vote to better maintain a friendship. Or lie about it. Again it simply doesn't matter.

Everything else aside, this is still terrible advice. Lie to your friend about your principles regarding genocide to "better maintain a friendship"? Gross.

Again it simply doesn't matter.

Socialism is not nihilism.

Maybe. But we also have plenty of nostalgia posts here about "remember that struggle session?" Literally one just yesterday about the BRICS girls struggle. Again. There's even that hexbear lore iceberg meme image that floats around sometimes. All it takes is skimming a single nostalgia thread to get that level of hexbear specific knowledge.

Their "the newsmega was the worst" part is what makes me think they probably were here for just a little while, though. Probably someone who couldn't let go of their imperialist brainworms and were flabbergasted at how we weren't all backing the poor smol bean wholesome Ukrainians and got their ass handed to them by people who actually have some understanding of geopolitics and history. The "treating it like football" is bizarre because the situation was the exact opposite, with the newsmega regulars often pointing out that that is exactly how the blue-and-yellow flag emoji people treat it, and ridiculing that kind of simplistic non-analysis. It's the typical accusation that's actually a confession.

My guess is that it was some lib who fancied themselves a leftie, who hung out here once or twice before the Ukraine conflict kicked off (when the newsmega was created, basically), said something cringe about it after it did and got schooled as a result. Rather than learn, they ragequit, unable to fathom how people who clearly knew much more than they did didn't support the typical US State Dept. narratives, which they still hold dear to their heart. Now they have constructed some bullshit scenario about it for the .world hexbear-hatred thread that also made them feel better about themselves.

Yeah but this is what people say to dismiss socialism/communism. "It's too complex, human nature, etc. etc."

Sure but lots of things are "hard." Or "complex." That's what zionists say about Israel ("oh it's soooo complex!") when we know for damn sure it's not.

You keep trotting this out but it's a ridiculous (and frustrating) comparison. People (libs/chuds) will often say "starving millions of people is bad" to "dismiss communism." It doesn't mean that the opposite is true and that "starving millions of people" is actually good. Those who say that it is bad are right. It is bad. It just doesn't apply to the Soviet Union or communism but it does apply to other circumstances (like Churchill’s evil, racist, and fully intentional genocidal policies causing four million people to starve to death during the Bengal "famine" in 1943). Just because people use a truism to sometimes criticize a thing unjustifiably, that doesn't mean the truism is false. Some things actually are inherent human nature, it's just that market competition isn't one of them. Some things actually are complex, it's just that the Isntreal-Palestine conflict isn't one of them. Etc.

I can't believe I'm reading this here and I'm not convinced you aren't a troll. Modern medicine is a fucking miracle of human accomplishment, and while it's not cured us of death or the human condition, and despite how much it is disgustingly hampered and distorted by capitalism, we are profoundly lucky to live in an age where so many of the conditions that have caused untold human suffering and death for the entire existence of our species are now nothing more than a minor inconvenience. I for one, without question, would not be alive without "modern medicine."

Here's the transcript. (Edit for clarity: link is an archive of NYT's transcript of the speech, not Hasan talking about it.)

As vice president, I have confronted threats to our security, negotiated with foreign leaders, strengthened our alliances and engaged with our brave troops overseas. As commander in chief, I will ensure America always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world.

@[email protected] posted this in the other thread about this earlier today, if anyone is interested in seeing more examples of how vile this person was, and why they deserve a crab-party and rip-bozo

I went through his tweets from the last year.

Yes, that's an important thing to remember. Instances like .world and justshit are largely responsible for dragging down .ml and other (relatively speaking) decent instances. On hexbear, we're used mostly seeing ourselves (obviously), lemmygrad, .ml, a little bit of db0, and a smattering of other little instances. The second you go on .ml, you're inundated with loads of the same shit we all thought had been left concentrated on reddit. It's not that .ml is that terrible, it's that it's too small to push back against the hordes of .worlders. And so the culture of .ml and other smaller instances slowly but surely gets degraded. Defederating from hexbear and lemmygrad preemptively by .world wasn't done just because they wanted to be "safe" from having to see opinions and takes based in a reality they like to deny (it was that too), but also so they could hold sway and more easily influence and dominate the fediverse.

For everyone on hexbear that was gung-ho about federation because it would mean actively dunking on libs, if you were one of the ones (like me) who liked the idea of arguing with liberals and putting them in their place for all the lurkers to see how inept their worldview is, I very much encourage you to make accounts on other instances and help push back against .world's insidious shit. If you're a hexbear that has had enough of that shit and just want to chill in a leftist space, I completely respect that and would suggest that you not make accounts on other instances.

Hexbear has almost fallen back to a state of existence similar to how it was before federation happened, with the biggest difference being more cross pollination with lemmygrad. Which is good for those I just mentioned who like to not have to see liberal and chuddy garbage outside of the dunk tank. But it's not good for .ml that they get so swamped by .world. I've said it before but I really do encourage hexbears who like the posting trenches to make accounts on .ml and check the same threads you read as a hexbear and take note of how drastically different the experience is.

This person has a long and sordid history as a misogynist piece of shit. They were fairly active on Lemmygrad who eventually banned them, but it was unfortunately just temporary. But you'll see the incel/MRA kind of trash they believe if you look at their lemmygrad modlog history.

That is really cool, but let's not pretend that DSA as an org isn't often times extremely lib and that any actual communist party should never find themselves to their right. Did anything ever happen to those DSA caucus leaders who snubbed the president of Cuba and went to meet with the Gusano opposition instead?

American foreign policy affects the entire world.

And you think Biden's foreign policy hasn't been a much bigger catastrophe for the world than Trump's was? How can you post so good on economics and MMT and China and then post this kind of liberal dredge? madeline-shock

I'm certainly not getting any wiser going through these conversations on repeat and I don't think anyone else is, either.

I bet a lot of lurkers are, including me.

I wish more of our team would disengage.

I wish for the opposite. It's always funny to watch these people fume and sputter when they are faced with dissent instead of the clapping seals they're used to. And I do learn a lot from what hexbears and lemmygradians say even when they're talking to someone unwilling to be educated.
