They don't receive suitcases of money. Their wives law firms get steady business from a network of donors. Their kids get past the fancy school acceptance filters despite being block heads. They're invited to speak at an overseas conference where they do one event and then 30 days of vacation. Their fake biographies of overcoming hardship get sold out and given out for free by their political party. They can trade stock with insider knowledge.

Bottom Right sees freedom as not being told by other rulers what to do. Your own rulers get to tell you what to do obviously.

This was an interesting side effect to discover about climate change. As the need for change increases, conservatives gain more power.

No One Can Own The Law—So Why Is Congress Advancing A Bill To Extend Copyright To It? from the don't-lock-up-the-law dept

Last week, the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted to advance the Protecting and Enhancing Public Access to Codes Act, or the Pro Codes Act (H.R. 1631), to the full House. The bill would extend copyright protection to codes (such as building codes) that are developed by standards development organizations (SDOs) and incorporated by reference into local, state, and federal laws, as long as the SDOs make the codes “available to the public free of charge online in a manner that does not substantially disrupt the ability of those organizations to earn revenue.”

The Internet Archive is doubling down on its position that its digital lending library service operates under the bounds of fair use. Major publishers assert that digitizing books without appropriate licensing amounts to infringement but IA counters that the practice is in the public interest. It also fits copyright's ultimate purpose; to promote the broad public availability of literature and other arts.

An operator of the widely popular piracy service 'BestBuyIPTV' has received a 30-month suspended prison sentence in Vietnam. The prosecution followed criminal referrals from the Premier League and ACE, who note that this is the country's first-ever piracy conviction. While this is significant, the BestBuyIPTV brand isn't gone. ___

The Premier League wants domain registrar GoDaddy to identify people connected to dozen of pirate sports streaming domains that broadcast live football matches. The information, including IP-addresses and payment information, could assist with enforcement efforts. In addition, the Premier League would like GoDaddy to take action against these infringements but, as far as we know, that hasn't happened yet.

It would stop being science very very quickly, and just be "hey girl, heard you want your son to attend the "control group" school".

Wish there was just a faster way to get citizen input.

"Hey folks, this is going to be a cost overrun for this very very good reason, please vote yay or nay in the weekly election".

Don't see how it could work now though, given that half the citizens are deeply committed to destroying everything to prove gov doesn't work.

I wish there was a goddamn economic calculator. Revenue minus (operating costs + re-investment + R&D) then divide it amongst all employees. Let us rank companies based on how bad that number is vs what the employees are actually paid.

Not an economist.

I'll settle for her being fired and charged with making up evidence. Let her name be entered into a national + open database of people whose words are worthless.

I'm more interested in the taxpayers compensating Riley for as much as possible, and maybe asking for higher quality police officers who can do their jobs. You know, the fiscally responsible path....
