As much as it was sad to see a lot of restaurants die during COVID, there were an awful lot of sushi abomination restaurants out there that I think we're all better off without. I actually had to stop eating sushi for a few years because we would try to order sushi and it would just be disgusting. You'd get either 1 of 2 scenarios - it was some very gimmicky sushi that you'd never eat more than once, or it was gross because the quality just wasn't up to par during lockdown. And sushi is unfortunately one of those foods that's very unforgiving and if you have even 1 bad experience, you won't be going back to that establishment. So I can see why a lot of them closed.

This is why I started making a lot of my own things. There are lots of options in the store for some items where you can get something without sugar that didn't need it. But then there's things like mayonnaise... Let me tell you that mayonnaise doesn't need any sugar and most brands that don't have sugar are like $11 for an 8oz jar. So I started making it myself at home. I also started making bread which later turned into a hobby, but now I can't eat the store bread because it's too sweet. I even make my own jam now and I know what you're gonna say "but jam is like... mostly sugar", but I'll have you know that jam tastes WAY better with half the sugar that it's typically made with. It's an art form to get it thick without adding more sugar, but it's worth it. Looking back, I know most people can't make all this shit and it's really sad that people can't buy things with less sugar at the store without paying an arm and a leg. It really says a lot about our society that this is true.

Those responsible for sacking the people who have just been sacked, have been sacked.

I'm enjoying the hell out of the wireless android auto in my new Prius. It just works and I don't have to pay a cent more to use it. We already spent too long waiting for car manufacturers to actually invest in their car's UI system and it never happened. Apple and Google had the perfect solution and now they're throwing it in the trash hoping that people will just be ok with the garbage they were putting out before? And they'll have to pay a subscription to use it to boot? Not a chance!

This is the best answer. There's a reason that subway maps are often not an accurate representation of where stops actually are on a map, but instead are condensed and made easier to read in a way that loosely shows where the stops are and also makes each stop easy to read along with other key info that's relevant. When you're on a train, you don't need accurate maps of where stop are, you just need to know where your stop is, how many stops away, or connecting trains.

Not that female anatomy is akin to a train system... Or is it?

It's more for programming when to brew coffee in the morning than for telling time. Then you can wake up and get coffee without having to think about it. Not that it's hard, but I'm sure removing that one little task makes many people's mornings a lot easier.

I can't tell you how much happier I was to move to a neighborhood in the city where the grocery store was a 5 min walk away. I always see old ladies with a wheelie cart walking home from the store. And one day I said Fuck it I'm getting an old lady cart! And it's the best! I can comfortably buy more groceries and walk them home. Only time I ever need to bring the car is if we're buying cases of beer or something else large.

This is the same shit that happened with braces when I was a kid. It makes me so angry. My parents, luckily, were too poor at the time for any of us to get braces. And then dentists inevitably told them we all need braces, my mom did some digging and decided it wasn't necessary. She originally did so to determine if they would need to come up with the money or not, but in doing so, found out it's unnecessary in most cases. Skip to today and my teeth are perfectly fine while my husband has all kinds of issues with his retainer leftover from when he has braces that I'm guessing he didn't need. While I'm not a doctor, my recommendation in regards to dentists will always be to get your regular cleanings done and fillings if necessary, but anything else, and you should get a second opinion.

Since nobody actually answered the question: Menards is a massive hardware store chain in the Midwest. When I say it's massive, it has everything you could ever need in a hardware store and more. Like there are usually multiple floors, a lumber yard, highly specialized sections, and even a small grocery section with food, pet supplies, clothing, etc. it's definitely the greatest hardware store ever conceived, but unfortunately the man who owns them is batshit crazy in classic Wisconsin fashion.

About a year ago, I was unable to drink alcohol for medical reasons. So I dove into some recipes for non-alcoholic cocktails, and I wasn't disappointed. There are loads of excellent non-alcoholic recipes that I enjoy just as much as their alcoholic counterparts.

This recipe is from the book Good Drinks:

  • 1oz basil matcha syrup
  • 1oz heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk
  • 3/4 oz lime juice
  • 3 oz soda water
  • matcha for garnish

Shake syrup, cream, and juice with ice and strain into a Collins glass over ice. Add soda water carefully and garnish by sprinkling matcha powder on top.

Enjoy your Independence Day weekend!

Ok it didn't exactly do anything crazy, but it was blooming like we had never seen before this last November! Absolutely gorgeous!

Lei Lani Volcano from my favorite tiki book Smuggler's Cove! What are your favorite cocktail books?

Recipe:

  • 3oz Bundaberg guava soda
  • 1 1/2oz pineapple juice
  • 3/4oz lime juice
  • 1oz coconut cream
  • 1 1/2oz blended aged rum

Add soda to a collins glass. Then add remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker and fill with cracked or cubed ice. Shake and double strain into the glass. Gently add cracked or cubed ice to the glass and garnish.
