MODERATORS

So, I started blocking accounts that don't engage with the stuff I post and just make personal attacks. After blocking these handful of accounts all the harassment stopped entirely. Vast majority of people on the lemmyverse are across different instances aren't attacking other people. There are just a handful of really active trolls out there, and I think the best policy might be to just start blocking them when we see them.

What about Villain?

We should have a thread where we post any troll accounts we encounter on the Fediverse so we can block them. Kind of a masterpost.

such things can become a bit of a dogma but i get that sentiment

Would be great to have something similar to the reddit masstagger where we can moderate a list of known federated troll accounts. I don't mind getting harassed on the internet that much but it would help out to see at a glance if the comment is coming from a known asshole. Might even help being less on edge towards the normal people out there.

Negl I miss Reddit Enhancement Suite just for the troll-flagging capabilities

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

ok, so I am usualy the first to argue aganst defedereating with any instance I would rather they could see us and then we can educate them. however seeing that lemmy.tedomum.net allowed a username of "hitlerdidnowrong" can we maybe consider looking into them and if we should defederate, like that just SCREAMS fash instance to me.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

they've been banned on that instance too (another Nazi "parody" of @dessalines' avatar and banner image)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Ahh then I retract my statement, I didn't see the ban

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All of those account links are mailto links for some reason.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh ha, I think the browser interprets the foo @ bar.baz as a mailto.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think if you type like @[email protected], Lemmy will automatically convert it into its Markdown hyperlink form

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago

ah you're right, let me update

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (3 children)

The funniest part is when one of these guys won't write a comment, but will just go and downvote every single comment on a post. Like yeah, that's a great use of your time there buddy.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 year ago

lol yeah, I just imagine them stamping their little feet while raging in front a keyboard

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Something I noticed is when I comment on a "controversial" post over on lemmy World News or something, there's a ripple effect of downvotes in my post history. It's like everything 5-6 posts back will get instantly downvoted if I say something crazy like "all Russians aren't evil", regardless of what the preceding posts were about. Doesn't seem like a great use of their time, because I really don't care. I only noticed by random chance when I was adjusting some stuff in my profile.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Oh no! A downvote! Anyways...

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I think that the moderators should do this more actively. I haven't been here for to long, but already saw a lot of trolling/Sealioning. Sometimes it gets really annoying.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I do think it would be good to have a policy to ban users who show a pattern of not engaging constructively.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We have been banning liberals liberally. Some trolls are good at their job and are able to bait ten or so replies with low effort regurgitation of PragerU level talking points before getting reported.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not me, I report at the slightest whiff of troll/liberalism zoidberge salute 2

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Report first, then engage! 😁

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

lol.. pragerU level taking points.. that made me chuckle

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Could we ban accounts under like a month old and/or with no post history? I wonder how many that would stop

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A lot of people like to lurk and we shouldn't discourage them from participating when they feel up to it. I'd give people the benefit of the doubt since there seem to be only a handful of trolls around.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Makes sense

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

The game is that they get banned, then come back with new accounts. The ones that engage here typically have new accounts.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

Bookmarking for later

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have noticed that when multiple accounts are involved they are, more often than not, from the same instance. I have noticed it mostly from the lemmy.ee instance aso I just assumed that was one of the instances the feds just keep spare accounts to use when needed.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago

yeah I noticed that as well

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

This will also be colored by the fact that the shitheads on beehaw can't even see what you say, but among instances that don't block us this makes sense.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

i do the same.. i don't want to spend my time arguing with people who are just arguing in bad faith, and i don't want to spend time arguing with people who want to nitpick and tell me what i can and cannot say according to their own personal opinions

the internet is a big place with so many possibilities.. I'm not going to feel bad about blocking people at all

edit: having said that last bit i realize I'm guilty of nitpicking things that annoy me but i never tell anyone they cannot say this or that thing

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 year ago

yeah, blocking trolls is just essential mental self care

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Basement dwelling NEET antis that want to spam our communities because they have nothing better to do, lol.
