Tryna be active on local servers but so many of them require real names, face pics, social media before even having ACCESS to the server. Like gee, could I atleast see what I'm missing out on? Just so I don't fall for a honey pot at the very least? I genuinely couldn't join them because I don't have social media, even if I did I wouldn't post my face to them (pre-requisite are socials with face in them)

Its very obvious they're all made by extremely tech and privacy illiterate people.

just got banned from worldnews for calling a ml user scum.

    reason for ban?

    banned multiple times

didn't know you could be banned because you've been banned before.

when I looked at who banned me, it seems they really don't like me across multiple communities over my entire lemmy history.

pretty sure I just pissed them off on one of their alts.

I have not once thought that first frame. I was a very early adopter of social media, but also early to feel and see the negatives. I don't understand how anyone who made the effort to get away from it could think what the first frame says.

Deleted every account years ago and never looked back. Recommend. The peace is enjoyable and Lemmy is chill.

    Certain instances moreso than others.

As a new user, a meme ranking instances from least to most chill would be illuminating

Even the least chill are pretty goddamn chill. There's a constant low-level flame war between lemmy.workd and lemmy.ml, for example, but it's really only irritating, not seriously fucked.

Most of the time it's 196 and shit posting and memes. Good times.

still shitty trolls with sock puppets, brigading, harassing, and being gross on lemmy too. but the volume is much lower.

Voyager’s tagging feature has made all of this not only easier to deal with, but sort of fun. I can make up my own labels such as ‘verified physicist’ or ‘paedo Nazi cunt’, and colour code them to easily spot them in threads. It diffuses my anger at trolls since I can spot them right away now. Highly recommend Voyager as a front end for Lemmy (and also to binge watch as the nights get long, Janeway is the bomb).

Voyager also has per-user vote tracking, so even without tagging someone you can see at a glance how often you've liked or disliked their posts and comments in the past. It makes detecting quality contributors or trolls much easier.

For example, I haven't tagged LillyPup yet but there's a green +54 next to your name so I know I've enjoyed your contributions many times in the past. :)

Lemmy is not chill. Try saying something this hivemind doesn't like. Wherever people gather, they're going to do people things. Lemmy is small, so the number of shitty people is relatively smaller.

It’s as chill as you make it. That’s why Lemmy and Mastodon are superior to every social network. You have full control over what communities you sub to, what folks you’ll tolerate, etc. It’s not trying to ragebait you at every corner with no way to avoid it other than not engaging or logging in at all.

A mod on here literally removed a whole thread I was in recently because they didn’t want to have to moderate the thread.

I had this exact experience on Lemmy, on blahaj actually, when a mod banned me for trying to give an honest and inclusive answer. Apparently I was feeding the trolls and banned as some kind of zero tolerance thing? No idea what happened but it reminded me of the Reddit mods who are irrationally angry at anyone who isn't 100% aligned with their world view.

Blahaj has a very strict stance. I thought it was a bit much at first myself, but their instance doesn't have the same feel of those snobbish reddit/lemmy communities that ban anyone who doesn't agree with their top posters/mods. Their intense moderation is meant to encourage participation which sounds paradoxical but does seem to be working.

So you went to .world, to avoid overzealous and unnecessary bans and moderation. Lol.

It's very possible the user didn't know.

Sometimes people don't know things and that's ok.

    You don't know some things.

    I hope this helps.

As an Omniscient Godlike entity, I don't get what you mean. /J

But /srs for a moment like I agree, like .ml .world are the biggest instances, they're gonna be the first ones most new users go to when joining Lemmy & you're not rlly gonna know what you get on an instance 'til you've joined Lemmy.

Yeah, this place is only tolerable if you block a lot of users and communities. It's better by default than other places, but there's still a lot of horrible bile and toxicity hurled daily.

Everyone I know who uses social media has massive anxiety and self-esteem issues.

I miss hanging out with folks who didn't know what it was and thought it was weird. But now if you are like that you are the weird one. I also increasingly find myself in the situation with people trying to convince me I'm the one with anxiety/esteem issues if I'm not posting on social media for likes...

Why don’t they just say Reddit?

Because it's everywhere online. It's not just a Reddit-problem. It's an everywhere-problem. I didn't even make this, I only edited the text and made the blue space a lot bigger around the blob. This is actually a meme template that's been used a few times here and there for various purposes, it has a good message.

I get it. I guess I just don’t really frequent places other than Reddit and this sounds like all the problems Reddit has specifically.

Like, all the other social media platforms are very different from Reddit, aren’t they?

I don’t really know. I quit Facebook like 15 years ago. Twitter I don’t frequent at all and definitely havent since Elon bought it. Instagram is an entirely different thing, like tumblr - never really any good at conversations.
