-I'm tired of Zoom's obnoxious yelling about its AI features and general bloatedness.

-I'm trying to reduce how much I use Google/Microsoft stuff, which includes Google Meet and Teams.

-I don't think I've heard about anyone using Skype since approximately 2010, and it's owned by Microsoft now anyway.

-Fuck Meta and all its products.

-I like Facetime the best of everything I've used, but that only works if an Apple user starts the call, and I don't love Apple as a company anymore either.

I'm guessing there are some nice non-bloated apps out there that aren't run by giant tech corporations. So what's your favorite app for video calls?

Signal. Or Proton Meet for meetings.

Does signal do like team meetings anyone can join with a link?

    Apparently yes: https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/7860719423002-How-to-create-and-share-call-links

But I've never tried it for that.

I use it for text voice and video with friends though.

Matrix. Many apps available, Element is quite simple yet charming.

I'm running a Matrix for family and friends. It mostly works, but people complain about notifications and stuff. Videos open slowly.

Thinking of running my own, how much storage does your matrix server fill up?

Honestly? Discord. When using a patched app (search for Morphe on android) it's quite bloat free once you strip all the nonsense.

For calls? I use normal calls because it just works and uses wifi anyway.

I've used signal for video calling quite a few times and while video quality can be randomly poor it works just fine

Delta-chat(and arcane-chat frontend) have video call built in.

    It may be Jitsi based.

  • Session It's like Signal, but EU made and more private. It's a bit rough around the edges, but it's getting there.

I honestly just use them for work and usually I don't have much choice then. Socialy I rather just see them in real space or talking on the phone is enough.

it is imput. its my experience. whats ironic is how your comment to mine ads nothing at all even vs mine which has little. Snark is easy and you are good at it. I mean a guy is in a room asking about something and someone who just got into the room is like. sorry dude I have not done that kind of thing in that way. then you come in and are like. well thats not very helpful. and now ther is a whole chain of little value going on in the room.

I am not trying to be snarky. you seem to interpret my words in the worst way possible. it was just a statement, that it adds nothing. my comment was somewhat meta, since it didn't comment contributing to the OP. but that is not meant sknarkily and I also dont want to dismiss your opinion, I just think that you should comment on asklemmy if there is additional value.

and also, I am a random on the internet, I dont know how others see it.

Yeah it was a statement that did not need to be made much like mine but in particular suggesting something about what I know or don't. Which is kinda derogatory. Look I don't know if you know yourself but before I replied I looked through your profile to see if you were having a bad day or anything. Look through your comments and how many are like this. You have a bad habit so I did not let it pass and gave it back to you. If you give you will recieve in kind.
