Yeah but also social media is just a medium. It's the people who create the culture, not the medium. Sure people adapt to other people but you still start somewhere.

Tumblr was popular with young people, women and minorities, and to this day it's overwhelmingly queer and female. Facebook was popular with young people but was quickly discovered by organisations and businesses as an easy way to be public facing, so over time it's become sort of more professional and inclusive of older people.

What kind of people used reddit? Before it got popular, it's culture was influenced by millennials, nerd culture and hobby forum culture. That's what's stayed. What kind of people use Lemmy? Well, that's the question isn't it?

    Culture = your Cult

The decentralized design of the Fediverse intentionally allows differing cultures to interact, while preventing any single one from dominating the means of communication. The attempt to define cultural rules is a fools errand without centralized control.

The Fediverse has no centralized control, and thus will never be subject to a single set of cultural rules - nor should it be.

Just let people be themselves. I think that the open source nature of the threadiverse will keep the culture pretty level headed. No algorithms trying to promote rage for clicks. It's gonna be fine.

I don't know what reddit's culture is like, since I left years ago.

I don't really like the parroting of in-jokes thing. Probably any sufficiently long lived large group will probably have in-jokes, but reddit-isms always grated the most.

People suck. They're going to suck here like they suck in reddit.

I'm sure every user here has their own culture.

Seriously, you should clean out your fridge once in awhile.

Forced culture is what shaped all the failed platforms like Reddit, I don't think I would like that.

Yeah, I agree, let’s force a non forced culture, with beans and hookers!

What people hate about reddit is what people hate about mobs. If Lemmy ever gets as big as reddit, it will suck just as much.

I hate this kind of talk. For me the point of the fediverse isn't that it's cool because it's niche, but that it's cool because it's a solution to a systemic problem with Social Media. I want Lemmy to get big and messy and full of obnoxious people. I think that's a GOOD thing. Because then they'll be on the fediverse, and not on a platform owned by a single billionaire

    Thankfully there's different instances

Having migrated a couple times, I've found that instances have their own culture and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yes, but here we are, anyway. Largest instance is R*ddit 2.0.

almost like its just a reflection of a general sample of humanity than any given platform.

weird how that happens... turns out; humans just suck

Humans do not suck. Some of us do because our societal systems are gamed to that endeavor. Other social systems are not and produce better humans, and some humans evolve to be better because of and despite those systems.
