Regardless of the outcome in the coming election, a new AP-NORC poll shows voters from both major political parties want the next Congress to focus on making life more affordable and ending the war in Iran, while fewer are looking for an emphasis on Donald Trump — whether it’s investigating him or supporting his agenda.

The results suggest that voters are ready for Congress to tackle core issues, despite Trump’s centrality in the midterm campaign.

About 8 in 10 registered voters, including a large majority of Republicans and Democrats, say lowering the cost of living should be one of the highest priorities for the session coming up, the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds.

This kinda sounds to me like a bunch of people who know they enabled him and don't want to have to face what that really means

This thread is full of people who actually think laws apply to rich people. No wonder y'all ain't commies.

You want accountability, the only kind of court that would ever do anything to them would be goddamn revolutionary tribunals. And you can say that unrealistic, and it is, but it's more realistic than thinking the existing political and judicial system would ever take real, meaningful action against a former president. And even if they did, Trump's fucking 80, he can easily drag out any legal precedings long enough for them not to matter. At best, maybe you get a fall guy, but you're never getting the main culprits.

Laws are just threats made by the ruling class, and the ruling class has a level of class solidarity that puts the rest of us to shame.

There was no justice for Bush's crimes, and there was no justice for Trump's first term. You're kidding yourself if you think it'll be different this time.

If the collapse of democracy is not a "core issue", then what is?

Who the fuck is this. I want Trump in prison. I want all his criminal underlings in prison. I want scorched earth. If he gets the Nixon treatment we might as well just fucking rip up the constitution.

Get Dems back in office will do what it always does after a Republican. Get the budget in order, lower prices, and stabilize the bleeding.

Not focusing on Trump will mean things will still just get worse he is a symptom of a disease and he and the disease must be dealt with at the same time.

Exactly this. You can't even get the budget under control until you lock up trump, his family, and his allies like musk, and enablers like the supreme court. Congress only writes the laws. Since when has trump obeyed the laws? Plug the leaks or the bucket will never fill.

If they try to business as usual this shit, I'm going to lose my mind. There need to be serious consequences for everyone doing wrong right now.

I already lost my mind when there were zero consequences for all the illegal, fucked up shit Bush did. At a certain point you just have to come to terms with the fact that the ruling class has solidarity and no president will ever be held accountable to the law under the current system. Trump already faced zero consequences for anything in his first term.

Both issues stem from the fact that Trump started an illegal war; he needs to be impeached for that, if nothing else.

Yeah, the fact that the survey treated this like an "either A or B" issue instead of a "to get A we need to B" one is some narrative crafting bullshit

Bingo - this is one of the primary reasons billionaires buy control of media outlets and systems - to be able to shift focus and change narratives in order to change the path of democracy, of oversight, of public discourse. There isn’t limited focus, we are humans and can pay attention to many things at once, but there are limited resources, limited patience, limited time, so they just have to change those things enough to make their preferences the only options viable and give plausible deniability to the leaders who want to ignore the cries for change from the “extreme” elements of society. Even if it’s coming pervasively from all portions.

Affordability is a bit bigger than just Trumps war. Minimum wage needs to be raised by several orders of magnitude, all businesses need to be heavily and aggressively regulated, and the buggest need to be either broken up, seized and made public utilities, or both

Capitalism is the root cause there, and while Trump is a pretty perfect avatar for capitalism made flesh. The war with Iran is making it worse but shit ain’t been affordable since Covid or before

Addressing Trump will not, by itseld, fix any problem but taking care of him is the first step in fixing any of them.

Laying the groundwork for democrats to say, "what we really need right now is unity, and that means letting everyone who is still actively trying to kill our country, off the hook."

Absolutely agree. Disciplining those that got us into this mess should also be as big of a priority so that we can show that this isn’t how you run things while simultaneously working to fix the fuckups of the anal warts we call “representatives” of the people.

with 535 members of congress (senate and reps) can't we do both? maybe set the bar higher than just do the least possible. Look to Mamdami and NYC for an example if you must, I'm sure they would love to provide a map.

    1. I don’t believe that’s true. And how convenient on the eve of a possible win for Dems. America wants to see crooks and pedos, and pedo protectors in jail.

    2. Congress can do both by staying in session and actually fucking working for more than a few weeks at a time.

Actually I want drumpf and all his allies/sycophants to be prosecuted past the furthest extent of the law. I want them to be tarred and feathered. Drawn and quartered. I want drumpf to watch everything he ever owned get taken away while he rots to death in solitary confinement.

  • [–] 3 points 16 hours ago

Yeah that’s IF they pull significant* majorities in both houses.

    * Not your Sinema-Manchin bullshit in-name-only majorities

After that we can squabble about why we aren’t doing everything at once all the time.

  • [–] 6 points 19 hours ago

Maybe the voters know that we don't need investigations, only prosecution based on all the mountains of corruption that has been done in plain view.

To be able to say the phrase "8 in 10", of course you have to exclude Trump. I bet you could get pretty close to two-thirds of respondents who want him removed as well, tho.

  • [–] 7 points 21 hours ago

I believe the new Congress will be smart and competent enough to do both!

Lol "and Iran" makes it sound like the poll respondents agree with the war rather than to end it*

This is a setup for letting Trump and his enablers off the hook. The Democrats will spout some nonsense about "national unity" or some such bullshit while sweeping it all under the rug.

So true. They did the same with W.

I hate to imagine how bad the next will be that makes Trump looks good by comparison, but the Dems sure as shit will do what you said, just like they did last time.

Our government is large enough to do multiple things. This narrow-sightedness only risks our democracy.
