Now that this is off the table, the minority that voted for a referendum should join hands with all Canadians and put the entire country forward. Be constructive instead of destructive!
I would love a world where people can change just like that: realize that they were wrong, admit that, and ideally make up for any possible damage they made.
This is not that world. Expect more butthurt, ulterior, sometimes open more often covert undermining activity from them and their handlers.
That won't change until a few of them are in prison.
Where would they go? Make their own country? I have a feeling this is from the biggest idiots in Canada that can't think past 2 years.
The US would swallow it up and Trump would promptly try to rename it Trumpland
It was so poorly thought through lol. I was arguing with someone about it and they were talking about how much money Alberta is going to save and I was like "In what currency? Because if you leave, d'you think Canada is still going to let you use the Canadian dollar?" and it was like it genuinely hadn't occurred to them.
And also, Treaty land is federal, not provincial. How was that supposed to work? Never got a good answer on that either.
Alberta would've had to be carved up. I wonder if the bigger cities like Calgary and Edmonton would have voted to stay in Canada leaving only the rural rabble to break off.
Looks like most, if not all, of the right wing power grab original 9 questions are passing though
And good luck to them getting movement on any of them.
For sure - but they're going to burn so much energy, and stir up so much shit, trying. Such a waste.
Questions 6-9 say "working with the governments of other willing provinces", so hopefully the other provinces will just tell Alberta to fuck off and then we don't have to worry about those, but you never know.

If the count finished right now, most of those questions would be a mandate to pursue
This was pretty close to my guesstimate of 25% voting to separate, with a significant percentage of those voting only to get Ottawa's attention.
I do believe, if the Senate is to stay, that it should be more representative of populations of the provinces of Canada. Currently far too many from Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes.
The Senate should be abolished. Bunch of crusty old fucks who are appointed, not elected is about as far away from democracy as it gets
This question frustrated me because I actually do think senate REFORM is worth investigating.
But that's a federal issue, and I desperately want the AB government to actually govern Alberta instead of acting like the official opposition to the federal government.
I wouldn't say abolished, but elected would be better.
If we elect the Senate, we will get governments that can't do anything because we will just fill the Senate with the opposite party.
Just get rid of it, it only ever existed for patronage and cronyism.
Charles Adler (Appointed 2024): The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and Grand Chief Cathy Merrick asked the Prime Minister and Governor General to rescind the radio host's appointment. Critics pointed to past 1999 on-air comments where he referred to Indigenous leaders as "uncivilized boneheads" and "intellectually moribund".
Tom Pitfield and Richard Martel (Appointed July 2026): Prime Minister Mark Carney appointed his long-time principal secretary and top advisor, Tom Pitfield, alongside Conservative MP Richard Martel.
Mulroney appointed his wife's hairdresser, only known as Rinaldo, to the Federal Business Development Bank of Canada .
Even a busted clock like Alberta is right twice a day.
The worry remains that the other 9 questions gives the government a mandate, which nobody wanted a referendum on anyways.
People are literally voting for the alberta government to try and abolish the federal senate.

Oh good. I mean how far down would you have to dig to uproot everything you want to take with you?
