FSD Crashes into California Highway Patrol

A video was posted by the official Facebook page of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), which reports on an October 13, 2026 accident. The video details that CHP Solano officers were responding to a fatal accident that happened on I-80 when a Tesla slammed into the accident scene and into a CHP patrol car with an officer inside. As a result, the already fatal scene nearly added two more fatalities, with both California officers seriously injured after the accident. Thankfully, the officers have already been released, while the Tesla driver sustained only minor injuries.

This all happened despite the fact that the CHP closed four lanes of the Interstate and diverted traffic to a slow lane. Part of CHP's efforts to investigate the scene also included the addition of high-visibility cones and markings, as well as emergency vehicles with lights on. The driver told the CHP that he was asleep behind the wheel with FSD fully engaged, yet the diverted lanes and emergency obstacle lights weren't enough to alert the FSD and wake the sleeping driver, raising more concerns about FSD's true capabilities and safety. There's a footage showing the Tesla driving into the scene of the accident at highway speeds.

I can’t help but think this could be avoided if Elon would just stop with his view that cars should self drive based only off cameras rather than also using LiDAR or other sensors.

I agree in general, but the more fundamental issue is that “full self-driving” doesn’t exist and it should be extremely and obviously illegal to even imply that it does, let alone that Teslas are capable of it. Even Waymos, which are more capable than Teslas of something that resembles actual self-driving, are limited to very specific geographies and are monitored at all times, with a human ready to step in to control them in the event they encounter anything remotely novel or unexpected.

Cars cannot drive themselves, by which I mean that they can’t handle the edge cases that actually matter when it comes to driving. Better sensors would reduce the chances of this type of accident happening, but the most reasonable solution is to treat automatic driving technology the same way you would treat cruise control: something that helps drivers drive, not something that pretends to let the driver stop paying attention.

One day we will likely be able to make self-driving systems that are at least good enough that they’re preferable to human drivers. Today is not that day, and until we do, we should be calling this type of technology “advanced cruise control” and “parking assist” and so on. Calling it “full self-driving” implies nothing less than the car being able to drive itself without needing a human, which means humans are going to intentionally take naps in their car instead of paying attention to the road.

His irrational cheapness and obsession with reinventing already-solved things like door handles has legitimately gotten people killed and injured.

Don’t get me started on how the boring company and hyperloop are just TRAINS!

He just ‘invented’ a worse version of trains.

Calling them a worse version of trains is extremely generous.

It’s a worse version of cars.

It’s just cars on a road, except they can only travel at a low speed, no overtaking, no dynamic routing.

Using golf carts instead of teslas would have been a better solution. Lime bikes are a more impressive innovation than his actually existing hyperloop.

Make ur cop cars more visible. Have you seen black out stealth police cars?

Wise drivers know that you never talk to the police. Tesla drivers know they are smarter than everybody else so they do whatever they want including talk to police. What's the worst that can happen?

i like the over-the-top cinematic cyberpunk meets UFC fighter promo background music for the video.

it makes me want to accidentally OD on fentanyl while doing a bump of what i think is cocaine that i lifted from the evidence lock up.

Not seriously enough I guess sadness

Drivers fall asleep and crash all the time, doesn't seem very newsworthy

yeah normal people just push autopilot and sleep and drive into traffic all the time. Totally normal. Definitely nothing fucked up happening here with the operation of thousand pounds of metal flying around at 60 mph

I've watched a guy fall asleep driving at high speed on the highway in downtown Atlanta. Straight into the concrete median and the car practically exploded. Autopilot would have been an improvement over what happened with him falling asleep driving in a dumb car.

Back when I was in my watching car crash video phase I seen so much dash cam footage of truck drivers falling asleep and causing accidents

The introduction of autopilot is not the beginning of people falling asleep while driving cars.

Read the entire comment chain, this is not relevant. This guy didn’t fall asleep at the wheel on accident, these people purposefully do this. They knowingly go to sleep with the auto-pilot on, they lie to each other that it's safe in their communities. It's the difference between accidental negligence leading to manslaughter vs. pre-meditated murder

Sleeping while driving is dangerous, always has been, always will be. World without end

this is not like a normal non-self driving car, because normal people will pull over when they get tired (a few don't, which is irresponsible and dangerous but relatively rare compared to self-driving fans who think they don't need to drive while on auto-pilot). Someone accidentally falling asleep while driving is a qualitatively different phenomena from people knowingly going to sleep after they put their car on autopilot.
