A key point in the text above is the uniquely critical role that oil and gas plays in the global economy.

There’s really nothing like it. It’s the spice.

Even rare earths, semiconductor grade silicon, chip production… restricting their supply would hurt but they don’t have the jugular vein nature of oil and gas.

The founders cashed out more $$$ with their stock sales than entire CoreWeave is realistically worth as a company

It’s realistically worth zero because at this point - considering it’s debt load, current interest rate, and the implications of higher government bond rates long term upon corporate bonds in general - the most prudent action would be to dissolve the enterprise right now and scrape it for parts while there is still a massive supply bottleneck for GPUs and RAM.

I think this talk of “super intelligent AI, a risk to civilization” and “oops our hacker bot hacked a website, it’s too intelligent to be controlled” are because Anthropic and OpenAI are losing market share to open weights models in a big way, so they’re scare mongering to try and get regulators to ban “Chinese models” or any competition.

Global equities fell as a selloff in the artificial-intelligence trade gathered speed and pushed investors toward the safety of bonds.

S&P 500 futures were down 0.3 percent while Nasdaq 100 contracts retreated 1.2 percent. The leg lower came as Anthropic PBC disclosed $16.8 billion in third-quarter growth to prospective investors, figures that suggested the pace of growth had slowed even as it remained robust.

An exchange-traded fund tracking chipmakers signaled the sector’s six-day selloff was set to continue. CoreWeave Inc. fell a further 6 percent in premarket trading after Wednesday’s 15 percent rout when its bonds also dropped to levels that typically show distress.

Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreads to new province bordering CAR

The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no vaccine or treatment. A first clinical trial for a vaccine is expected to begin in the DRC by the end of October, according to the World Health Organization.

The outbreak was declared on May 15 and has caused over 9,000 cases and 4,441 deaths, according to new figures on Wednesday.

Cases have also been recorded in Uganda, which declared itself Ebola-free in August. Meanwhile, Kenya on Wednesday announced its second case of the virus, a relative of the first patient, who died on October 5.

Teen shooter kills 4 at Oregon elementary school before being shot by a witness

A 16-year-old shot his way through locked doors to get into an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, killing three children and a teacher. He was then shot by a person at the scene who followed him inside, authorities said.

The suspect was found dead inside the school minutes after the shooting was first reported, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said.

The three children killed were aged 5, 8 and 11. Another child, 7, and a teacher, 54, were injured and taken to the hospital in critical condition, he said.

Police said they did not know if the shooter knew anyone at the school or whether he had attended.

The attacker used a pump-action shotgun that was purchased by his mother
