I have 3 but would LOVE to hear more....

You can always have more but you can't have less

This one's from my dad and it really stuck with me. You can, and really should, apply this to any intoxicant.

On the pitch is off the streets

This is about getting restless kids, or kids who might be in a bad situation, into sports.

The axe forgets but the tree remembers

Translation on this one: People who cause hurt are less likely to remember than those it affected.

"So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble." - great reminder for anxious people but also for everyone in general, over worrying is not only a bad time but also wasteful and unproductive

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money" - anti-capitalist/greediness statement that is the basis for any actual prosocial society

"You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." - a reminder to approach everyone with love and patience, and not just because it's the right thing to do but because, if you want to change their mind, you're gonna have to go softly and wisely (this includes MAGA!)

All from the big J of Nazareth, of course.

    Quando omni flunks, moritati.

Or a real piece of advice from my grandpa when I got my first "real" job.

    "Everyone wants to feel important."

If you are working with 20 different clients on a product today, each one of them should feel like they matter more to you than the one before, or the one after. Make time to talk with them. Ask questions to know more about them or their business. Do a little research beforehand if you can. Make sure that you know their name, and that they know yours.

Wish in one hand, shit in the other, and see which one fills up first.

Happiness is an inside joke. Not everyone is going to get it.

There are more casualties in this world from indecision than bad decisions.

Don't envy old age. The newspaper will still come out long after you are no longer mentioned. Invest your youth.

The ignorant search for something. The discover demands all he sees makes sense.

We come into this world full of love and fear of losing love. All other emotion is a distraction. This is the base emotion. If you can die without fear and still full of love, you've won the game of life.

Learned that the hard way when I was best friends with someone who literally obsessed over their life being like a real-life K-drama

The thing about people who thrive on being the center of drama is that eventually you will be a part of it even if you try your damnedest not to

A former boss would say, "Don't just do something. Sit there!"

It's a way to remember that very often it is more important to do the right thing than it is to just do something. Stop, think, then act.

I often think about that quote whenever I miss the past. Nostalgia is inevitable, but regret over missed opportunities is never guaranteed :,)

Many (maybe even most?) adages have an opposite.

"Reach for the stars", but "sky's the limit".

"Knowledge is power," but "ignorance is bliss."

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder," but "out of sight, out of mind."

"Better safe than sorry," but "nothing ventured, nothing gained."

"The pen is mightier than the sword," but "actions speak louder than words."

"Great minds think alike," but "fools seldom differ."

"Too many cooks spoil the broth," but "many hands make light work."

I think that there's a fundamental disconnect between respect for somebody, and how you treat them. How you treat them reveals everything about you, and not much about them. For example, ICE goons don't respect the immigrants that they see as breaking the law. But their, unhinged, gleeful violence comes from within their own disordered brains. We can't tell anything at all about the people ICE targets by the fact that agents abuse them, but we can be 100% sure that the agents are psychopathic shitheels. "Respect" depends on your point of view, while behavior is tangible.

Put another way, nobody can make you behave a certain way, and if somebody doesn't earn your respect, set a boundary and remove them from your life. Don't pretend that others force you to behave a certain way.

Only break one law at a time.

For example; If you have an AI executive tied up in the trunk of your car, make sure the tail lights all work.

Oh, I thought of another, which I’ve said to my kid hundreds of times over the years:

‘It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it’, typically with things like an umbrella or water.

"It's easy to be the band of misfits who plays by their own rules and gets things done. It's much more difficult to do exceptional work and do it the right way the whole time."

Sort of a long form "Any job worth doing is with doing right" but focuses more on the team doing the work.

And, yes, at the time the workplace culture was firmly in the "Play hard, work to standard, cut the corners just enough that we don't get in trouble" realm. Lots of hangovers during that job...

    I've got some.

"I keep cutting but it's still too short."

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to act despite it."

"We see the effects of things, not the things themselves."

Here's a few that stuck with me over the years:

"A circle looks at a square and sees a badly made circle." --Jeff VanderMeer

"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire." --Gustav Mahler

"If you trust in yourself. . .and believe in your dreams. . .and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy." - - Sir Terry Pratchett
