Documents obtained and released on Wednesday by the advocacy group Democracy Forward show that the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has gathered tens of millions of voter records ahead of the midterm elections as part of a purported effort to combat “voter fraud.”

Democracy Forward, which obtained the ICE documents through the Freedom of Information Act, said records from the agency’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) branch underscore how the Trump administration is “using the power of the government to try to silence eligible voters and prevent them from accessing the ballot.”

My father and sister got their mail-in ballots yesterday, but I did not receive mine. I'm pretty vocal about my politics, and I'm an anarchist. Shit already wasn't settling right with me, and now I see this news.

If you structure voting laws such that you could illegally register or vote, you want this to happen. There is really no reason you would need a fucking third agency checking the legitimacy of votes. Especially since voter fraud has been checked and checked again, so many times recently in the US, and every fucking time it turned out to be less then a nothing burger. Why in the ever-loving fucking fuck would some Immigration and Customs agency EVER (EVER!?) need voter records. It's a plain violation of the right to vote in privacy.

    It's fuckin' rotten.

People keep saying "why are these heavily armed and funded fascists building a trap?!" Over and over, refusing to look at the very logical and obvious answer.

Ah chomo, love that! Because it's like homo! And both are the bad sex men that we don't like right? Ha ha ha!

If the penis doesn't go in the vagina, it better go in the ass or mouth of a person who has had a vagina since they were a baby! But not while they are a baby! Right?! -jesus

That word was born in men's prisons.

Yes, it is a portmanteau of CHild MOlester, but it was born because it is almost exactly the word "homo" which is a slur that was already being thrown around full of spite and violence to mean "a man who does sex I hate".

The word chomo means "kiddy-style fa**ot".

It would be like if a bunch of white people started calling Chinese people "chiggers". No, it's not the N slur but it means "like that other race of people I hate".

Who would have thought that the presidents personal police force would act like the presidents personal police force?

Literally nobody could have forseen this.

The 166-page document that ICE turned over to Democracy Forward shows that HSI has considered sending undercover agents to investigate nonprofit organizations accused of illegally registering noncitizens to vote. President Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly and baselessly claimed that noncitizen voting is a significant problem in the US.

HSI admits in one of the newly released documents that its “review” of more than 40 nonprofits in New Jersey uncovered “no derogatory information.”

    This sounds about right.

The most common work trumps administration has done is proving the government actually wasn’t that inefficient or ineffective after all, that fraud exists but was minuscule and fairly well addressed, that voter fraud is almost non existent and primarily exists in conservative extremist circles, but still in numbers far too low to even register statistically or effectively.

Yep. Trump has basically fucked up the government as pretense for privatizing it.

Exactly, this has been the right-wing plan since at least the Powell memo and other plans since then to keep their hoarded wealth and power over the majority. Lies to mislead about public programs, lies to stoke prejudice, more tribalism, get the prejudiced voters to resent the scapegoats, taught to fear and protect how they already benefit from the systems, and keep others below them.

Well republicans didn’t stop him as a pretense for privatizing services, he did it because that’s his only move throughout all his life - get his hands on something he didn’t and couldn’t build, make it unstable, worse, dangerous, on the verge of collapse, extract any wealth he can under the guise of rebuilding, self aggrandize while doing that, praising himself as a genius builder, and extort anyone even remotely connected to the project and industry with promises to protect them from the consequences and fallout of his own actions.

It's funny how Trump and his co-conspirators are so incompetent even at fascism that a lot of the low-level footsoldiers aren't getting the memo that trying to do their "job" sincerely isn't the point.

Yep, it’s how you know which ones are actually dangerous, like Tucker - people wondered why he suddenly got off the train and started criticizing Trump, when it was clear he didn’t stop being a bigoted white supremacist corporatist authoritarian wannabe - he got off the train because he realized it would ruin the goals of his ilk to catch the bumper their dogs bark at with someone like Trump and his people in charge. They needed competence to get his vision executed, and anything this stupid would ruin those chances for decades.

DHS, and by association, ICE, are by far theost rife with "waste, fraud, and abuse". Where's the inspector general on that?

in what state does it record who voted, in a manner that is rigorous? in my town a little old lady looks at my id or knows me and goes to a roll of names, finds my addr and crosses my name off. in pencil. or pen sometimes. and i have no idea, unless i am watching if she messes up.

it’s not a real system to indicate i have voted.

and there should not really be one anyway. i am never going to scan my id into a computer to vote

I have always been a registered Republican. With the exception of John McCain when he was running for president, I have never voted for a Republican in a general election in my life.

I used to do that until the corporate democrats started going too far right. I switched to Democrat to be able to vote progressive in the primaries.

While I agree that McCain was probably one of the last Republicans I had even a shred of respect for, why are you registering GOP? At this point, I really do consider them to be essentially a lost cause.

The word "registering" implies a recurring activity. You register once.

Originally, the idea was to primary moderates instead of whack jobs, but that ship sailed in Texas and I stopped voting in primaries there for many years. Now that I moved to Wyoming, it is once again very important to vote in R primaries because here we have moderate Rs being threatened by crazies.

Probably to be a spoiler vote in their Primaries. Vote for the craziest GOP candidates so that no one votes GOP in the General.

  • I mean… we are all well aware of how that tactic pans out these days. It’s frankly far too risky of a play, imo. Not to mention, that strategy has the very obvious side effect of pushing right-wing politics in a more radical and absolutist direction, which is categorically counterproductive.

Pied piper strategy works so well. Just ask trump, MTG, Boebert etc... bottom line, there's 2 kinds of republican voters, crazies, and people who don't pay attention to anything but have been told to always vote R because abortion or guns are their hot button item.
