The true solution here is to stand your ground and shoot the aggressive attacking trolley in self defense. Sure, it won't stop the trolley, but you'll get to legally shoot someone and you might even still have time to jump out of the way after you run out of bullets.

Why shoot the driver? You want their suffering to be psychological, not physical. Use the gun to quickly kidnap 6 people, steal some rope, and find the nearest track switch. Probably not in that order.
