The true solution here is to stand your ground and shoot the aggressive attacking trolley in self defense. Sure, it won't stop the trolley, but you'll get to legally shoot someone and you might even still have time to jump out of the way after you run out of bullets.

    You have to make the driver think it's their fault. So you have to keep it on the scheduled track, but sabotage the brakes just enough that they cannot stop in time to save anyone, only to observe the terrible aftermath

    If you go with the stand your ground solution, it doesn't matter what the driver thinks. Because you have all the evidence needed that he came at you with malicious intent, and also the driver is dead at the end and cannot contradict you. If a trolley comes at you like that, you have a legal right to stand your ground and defend yourself with lethal force. At that point no other moral or philosophical factors matter once you decide to stand your ground. (Legality may vary by jurisdiction.)
