Feel free to share your photos and other birding-related content here. If a photo you post isn't yours, please credit the original creator! Additionally, it would be appreciated if the location of the sighting and a date were given when a photo or question is posted. You do not have to give the precise location, something like "Northern Idaho, June 2023" or even "North-Western US, June 2023" suffices.

Just wanted to say hello from [email protected] and to let you know we're holding an Owl of the Year tournament just for fun.

Every day I try to post an owl or 2, from common ones to ones where there may only be a few dozen in the whole world. I've also featured rescues around the US and a few other countries. I just try to give everyone something positive to look forward to each day, so come check us out if you haven't already.

Today's matches are the Barn Owl vs Bare Legged Owl and the Eastern Screech vs Crested Owl.

Here's the full bracket:

They've all got long legs, they have an extra leg bone we don't have! (Tarsus)

Edit: I see my mistake now! Fixed!

Why is Elf up against Powerful right away? The best-named owl contest will be over in the first round.

I'm kinda excited that it's happening. It's a real David vs Goliath match.

I tried to take any personal bias out, and pretty much seeded by how familiar I felt people in the community were with the different owls overall.

I know who my final 4 would be, but I won't say, but many of my personal favs I know aren't going to make it.

I just hope everyone that participates has fun and learns about a new owl or 2.

I know, you should take this as a light-hearted jab. The point is not to choose the best owl species name, after all.

That is how I took it. Everyone here has always been very friendly.

There are a few owls in need of new names though, since the Audubon Society vote this year to rename anything named after a person.

That's not this contest, though it would be fun too!
