A community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general!

Feel free to share your photos and other birding-related content here. If a photo you post isn't yours, please credit the original creator! Additionally, it would be appreciated if the location of the sighting and a date were given when a photo or question is posted. You do not have to give the precise location, something like "Northern Idaho, June 2023" or even "North-Western US, June 2023" suffices.

It seems like our birding community here has reached 1 thousand subscribers! I am very glad that there's this many birding enthusiasts here on Lemmy already :-)

I just want to take this time to welcome everyone to this community (do you still say "sub" even here on Lemmy?) and hope you enjoy your time here :-) Been seeing a lot of interesting bird posts here lately already.

Now, this is the first time I've ever moderated a community like this so I've no idea if there's anything that's missing. If you have any suggestions, feel free to tell me!

Reading, UK. Canon R6 + 800mm, 1/1000s, ISO12800 (AKA overcast and slightly misty as befits Halloween).

First time seeing a pair together (and not often seen at all) - though its possible both of these are females, none of my photos show the distinctive orange in the crest of the male.

Across the pond you might call them one of the Kinglet family, but to be precise, Regulus Regulus.

Mandarin Duck, Reading, UK One of a group of at least a Baker's Dozen of them on a small pond., so I guess some will be off before the Spring. Canon R6 + 800mm, 1/1000s, ISO 5000, F9

Today's shots near the Yew tree got me this Redwing flying off - though I started pressing the shutter when I thought it was still.

Reading, UK Canon R6 + 800mm, F9, 1/800s, ISO16000 An overcast autumn day is not the time for fast speeds and low ISOs, alas.

I'm reasonably sure this is a song thrush, but if someone wants to tell me its a mistle thrush go for it!

This is a very popular yew tree with birds and squirrels, but alas, no good places to sit with a clear view of the current feeding sites.

Reading, UK Canon R6 + 800mm. Grey day, so only 1/800s, ISO4000

It always amuses me that once there were the Wren and Redbreast. Then there were Jenny Wren and Robin Redbreast (who famously got married). But then we ended with the commonest names being Wren and Robin. Tom Tit, and Maggie Pie are more of the same types of naming.

Oh, and a bonus

Poor little thing hit my window. Thankfully it flew away after 30 mins

It's autumn, the light is not great, and so the sharpness suffers, but this still amused me.

For all its flying away from me, I was quite pleased with this. I saw what might be a jay land in uncut grass where I could barely see it. But I could also see a runner coming along the path and knowing the local Jays, it would fly off in ... 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... click!

I rode the new bike out off road, through grass tussocks and all sorts of bumps to get this viewpoint!

I don't get too many Flickers around, so when I see one I try to get a picture.

It's the older one of the two that grew up on my balcony. I haven't seen the younger one in a long time, this one i had not seen for two weeks (for which one i was on holidays).

Fed him some sunflower hearts. He is absolutely not scared of me and also not of my camera. When i tried to pet him, he picked at me and also hit me with a wing some time ago, haha. I don't think he'd do that if he was actually scared.

He then was sitting in the corner of the balcony where he used to sit with his little sister when they couldn't fly.

Mom and pops were just checking out my balcony again to find a place to nest, but i saw them do it yesterday already and upgraded the anti nestabiltity a bit. They left now, i don't think they found anything good today.

The Eurasian nuthatch, we have m on our balcony everyday and at first they got harassed by the blue tits but they all seem to get along now. They move smooth and appear glued to any surface.

This picture is not OC.

Okay, I've decided that a break from Ibis photos is in order (Robin told me to post his portrait, and what Robin wants he gets)

Eurasian Robin who let me get real close this morning.
