I'm in Calgary and I remember chatting with some folks in Denver a few winters back. We were talking weather and they said "oh its super cold here right now, just hit -10 f (-23 c)" and I was like "yeah cold here too, just hit -65 with wind chill." They asked me if I meant celcius or Fahrenheit and I just said "honestly at this point it doesn't matter."
No break it down into 5 year blocks showing sets of stations added in each block.
There is a place in Saskatchewan that had +50c and -50C in one year. Wild that people live there, +50C is way too hot for me.
I took the family on a road trip through South Dakota this summer. For some reason in my mind, I thought South Dakota is north - and north is cold. Jesus fucking Christ was I wrong. It was unbearably hot. We tried going outside in the Badlands and had to get back in the car after like 5 minutes. Fuck that place and it's crazy heat.
Yeah, the Plains get pretty hot and humid, especially with the flatness and general lack of trees. I remember a 118°F day in east-river SD in 2005 or -6, a shitty day to be a lifeguard lol. At least there's a little geography in the Badlands, and you're close to the Black Hills, which are gorgeous. But yeah, they are called the Badlands for a reason lol.
this summer has been unlike others. you might have done the exact same thing in half the country.
when i was a kid (seems like eons ago) we vacationed there a lot, in north and south dakota (and a little mt and wy). mom and me loved the badlands. the terrain and features, wildlife, the night sky... i don't remember it ever being "too hot" to be outside. we camped, in a tent or popup; so outside is where we were basically all the time.

So... (9/5[F/C])*(-40[C])+32=-40[F] is where they meet.
I prefer the converted fractions for ease. Your solution while right will confuse most Americans. (1.8x-40c)+32=-40f
Dear fellow Americans: Fun tip, lazy (but inaccurate) math is (2x-40c)+30= -50f which when you get to normal ranges works well enough in a margin of error. Or just learn to enjoy the beautiful thing that is Celsius and stop using/converting to Fahrenheit.

Where I live in Sweden I have not seen quite that spread of temperatures yet. But not far off... I have seen -43C and +35C in the same area.
It’s pretty insane. Need to be prepared for any kind of weather. We had a 121F swing this year in Minneapolis. It was -21F on January 23, 2026, and 100F on July 27, 2026.

I grew up in the center of the red blob. Highest temp I remember is 112F and lowest is -52F. Those aren't even records. Wind is brutal as well.
The place I grew up in is one of the places marked on this map. At one point in time in the 90s we had one of the highest swings of temperature in a single day that had ever been recorded in a single place where we had nearly a 40 degree temperature difference between nighttime and daytime. It's also one of the highest diurnal temperature places. During the winter time, it often gets well below zero. And I believe the record set in the 30s was negative 43f degrees. In the hottest temperature in the summer has been well over 100, nearly 110. And for an area in the high desert, that is normal.
Note to self: Don’t live there.
As a pretty much lifelong Wyomingite, it's not so bad. The wind is a bigger problem frankly.

Those could very well be some of the best places to be at if it wasn't for the heat on the hottest days (10°C colder would be much better, obviously). It's also important to keep in mind it's not the same to have a single day at +40°C than a whole month at +40°C. It's a common part of the narrative spread by negationists that we already had sudden temperature spikes recorded decades ago, conveniently ignoring the worsening sustained temperatures that have been recorded for years. Anyone with a pinch of curiosity can check the numbers.
Maybe, but I’m of the opinion that the best places to be will be those with shade and working aquifers as those become fewer and fewer
To be fair, some of the marked locations are near the great lakes, so if having a large water source is one of the metrics those ones at least still fit.
Except the lakes are polluted already and going to get far worse, as is the land.
Bald Eagles on lake michigan only average I think like 7 or 10 years, the ones inland like 15 or 20 or something, if I recall the numbers exactly but it's a big difference and it's because of the pollution.
