    Since 3GW must go somewhere, and it's probably going to be into heat, can anybody calculate how many seconds can a human-sized object absorb 3GW of power before burning up?

    Staying this close to anything emitting 3GW of heat looks like a bad idea.

    I always assumed the small wires were just for control or telemetry of some sort and the reactor itself had contacts on it that transferred power through a socket.

    Though I guess that wouldn't make sense on the one in Tony's chest.

    My thought is that they just powered the electromagnet magnet in his chest, and the reactor interfaces with the suits through some other interface. He doesn't plug the suit into a wire coming out of his body.

    I like how functionally iron man 1 negates the plot of the first Avengers movie because stark made a pocket fusion reactor that would absolutely eliminate the energy demands of the world and remove the need tk research the teaseract as an alternative energy source.

    The wires are just for the magnet. The suits are powered via contract to the reactor frame. (That’s still a more than two DeLorians worth of power drawn through a 10 cm ring. Hello 3rd degree burns.)

    Heat is a function of current, not voltage.

    Watts is volts x current.

    Ohms law means you can algebraically substitute V = I * R

    P = i^2 * R

    P = VI

    P = V^2 * R

    Should be P = V^2 / R, but other than that, yes exactly.

    Everyone saying "it scales with voltage" or "it scales with resistance" are describing different sides of the same coin. At the end of the day, the thing we're talking about is just power, you can pick and choose whichever version of the power formula that you want.

    Yes, but the power dissipated by a wire is, roughly speaking, a function of current, with the voltage across the wire depending on the current and the wire resistance (Ohm's law). For a wire, you use P = I^2^ R, and for a load, you use P = V^2^ / R.

    In other words, the current through a wire is dependent only on the load and its power supply, while the voltage across it depends on both the current and the size of the wire. Hence, it's cleaner to talk about the current

    This is why AWG charts always give a current rating, not a power rating:

    Joule's first law (also just Joule's law), states that the power of heating generated by an electrical conductor equals the product of its resistance and the square of the current. Heat is a function of current, not total power.

    See Blue_Morpho's comment above. The things you're describing as the product of resistance and the square of the current is power.

    Heat is literally power dissipation. Saying "heat is a function of power" is essentially a tautology.

    imo iron man was never sci-fi, it was more of a magical realism where the "rule of cool" is law.

    I mean we're talking about the same universe that has the likes of Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch bending and breaking every single possible rule of physics with a flick of the wrist.
