    Dear OP,
You've posted an image instead of linking to the article. I don't understand why everyone on Lemmy doesn't understand this is completely worthless.

It was also posted on MSN, so you can avoid the WSJ paywall.

It's clickbaity. The conclusion is pretty unexciting: for most people, all you need to do is drink water with food and when you get thirsty. Maybe this will help somebody who's over-obsessed with getting enough water, and it's impacting their quality of life? It really feels like they couldn't find anything good to write about, so they had to dredge this up.

    NB: the conclusion includes this:

One caveat: Some researchers warn thirst can be delayed or reduced with age or certain medications.

Age or certain medications or certain medical conditions. I have ADHD, so I legit won't get thirsty 95% of the time. I have to have something to remind me to drink.

Three article boils down to the author being a whiny WSJ entitled asshole, which is what I expect from the WSJ.

Author, you don't need the 40 oz cup.

Quoted Expert, you need around 125 oz a day.

Author, but water is so boring and tasteless, I want sugar and you get a fraction of water from food right? I don't wanna drink water. Written Toddler Tantrum ensues

Author, so in conclusion you don't need that 40 oz water cup.

The rest of us, STFU you entitled twat.

    Over-hydrating doesn't help, but under-hydrating sure does.

If you're pee is light yellow ya doin' fine.

Looked at the article, and it starts off pretty stupid

While everyone else seems to be slugging H20 from 40-ounce Stanley tumblers, I have never understood the appeal of drinking plain, tasteless water all day.

Some people live in areas where the water tastes bad, but seeing the water as "boring" might mean that you're drinking too much of the other stuff (soft drinks, juice, sugary etc). It's not that those other things are not hydrating, but they're unhealthy for other reasons.

The question feels more pressing than ever given rising temperatures, heat waves

I refuse to normalize a world where people lack access to clean drinking water. 😠

The rest of the article is pretty standard advice. There's no set amount of water that everyone needs to drink, and your diet/lifestyle/body composition/the weather will all play a role. Going based on thirst is a good indicator, but make sure you actually drink water when you're thirsty. !hydrohomies@lemmy.ml

But using that to justify unequal access to clean drinking water is a big no.

Right wing newspapers love to do this shit where I live. We get into a crisis, people start skipping meals because they don't have money, and they will talk about the health benefits of dieting and fasting 🙄

It has some grains of truth but it's mingled with too much personal opinion.

There are studies on how much water humans really need. If you want to calculate it the scientific way, you need to factor in at least lean muscle mass, total mass, surface area, ambient temperature and humidity, activity levels, and diet. There's no magic number of ounces that's correct for everyone.

Fortunately we've evolved a really awesome mechanism. When your body needs more water, you get thirsty.

So if you want to stay properly hydrated, drink whenever you feel even a little thirsty.

You should be drinking 3 liters per day. 40oz is about 1. You should carry those bottles with you all day, and fill it 3 times.

It seems to be an American thing. When I was in the US I was confused by all that drink cans are labeled in weight measurements rather than in liquid measurements. Although I guess it's the US so I should just be grateful that it wasn't been measured in fractions of a corgi or something.

In the water wars documentary, Holes, it was proven that children and young adults could work all day in the sun without any significant amount of water. Therefore your allocation of water will be limited further until morale improves. Woke unionized overpaid bureacrats just want to take all your money to waste water, instead of using that money for useful datacenters and more oil drilling.

  • Ditched the 40oz for a 134oz. Best decison I've ever made. All the water I want and a weapon built into one device. It even comes with nice sturdy handles.
