What happens to expired domains

Inspiration: The MLMYM Lemmy frontend project seems to be a bit abandoned. There used to be a domain associated with it, but it now points to some Chinese porn site.
That domain still exists in Alpine repo, for example: https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/edge/community/x86_64/mlmym (NSFW)
I have emailed the package maintainer regarding the URL, though I am not sure if that's a correct way to go about things.
