According to U.S. Central Command, however, "These reports are false."

"As we have continuously seen, Iran continues to spread lies and false information," Emma Thompson, Central Command spokesperson, said in an email to Snopes.

We have not rated this claim because we don't have additional details about this rumor. Iranian media included very little concrete information, including the date of the alleged incident, making it more difficult to independently disprove the claim.

Still, there's no evidence that Central Command's statement is incorrect. Given reported communication between those aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and their families — and heightened media scrutiny — it seems unlikely that the military could hide the deaths of seven service members due to a knife brawl.

I mean their loved ones would know they are on the ship, so they would need to explain to several dozen people how 7 people died on an aircraft carrier that was not under attack, and secure any leaks from witnesses pretty much forever. It would be quite the task

I don't believe they could hide the deaths of the sailors for any appreciable length of time, but I believe they could easily hide the circumstances surrounding a few deaths and intimidate a couple witnesses. The military isn't even obligated to announce how its troops are killed.^["The US military officials did not provide details on how and when the troops lost their lives or sustained injuries." https://www.dw.com/en/us-confirms-american-troops-killed-wounded-in-iran-clashes/a-76177887]

    A hypothetical

Imagine Private Johnson being told that if he speaks about what he saw that he will be court-martialed. He can't tell anyone on the outside during his deployment because all communications are monitored. When he gets back home, he has three options:

    1. He goes on the record to the media with his story.

    2. He tells someone in confidence, with the stipulation that they not reveal who told them.

    3. He says nothing.

In case #1, he goes to jail. In case #2, without any attribution, the story becomes hearsay. A rumor. Which is exactly what it is right now.

This is a matter of opinion that is highly dependent on worldview and unlikely to be resolved by debate.

Isn't this a thing in mgs v when your troop morale goes low? I remember a knife fight in one of the trailers.
