I was once a reddit atheist. Then I got confused when they all stopped complaining about Christianity and moved onto anita sarkeesian and islam hate and all of a sudden Christianity was good now.

TAA isn’t really that bad these days. But I’ve been proud of DarkMatter2525 in particular.
If it was up to me we’d have another go at a ‘rational skeptic’ movement with Darkmatter in charge. We also have a few new faces like Genetically Modified Skeptic.
Of course reddit atheism just petered out and just became Christian, but some of that energy I think is still viable.

Everyone loves conservatism but their greatest fear is a form of conservatism where they’re on the receiving end.
Well, public vocal athiesm was definitely a thing back when I was in high school. That said, I was elected president of the atheism club (which I joked was the religious debate club since we barely spend any time actually discussing the philosophical implications of atheism, instead debating evangelicals who would crash the club and just want to debate) one year, mostly because nobody else wanted to do it, and I was the least socially awkward member (which is v. true. I can get along with pretty much anyone, which is both a blessing and a curse because so many people just feel this deep need to tell me the worst aspects about themselves and I have to decide if I will associate with them anymore).
I mean, tame in comparisons to the evangelicals (their club had the money to by pizza for every meeting, which I would of course attend every time and eat because fuck it free pizza), but still, there were some absolutely annoying little pricks in the club.
Atheism is the easiest religion to troll
Funny enough, in my experience, many Christians will say atheism is or isn't a religion depending on what suits their purposes at the time. It's a religion when they want to accuse atheists of hypocrisy and it's not a religion when it comes to whether it is entitled to Constitutional protections of religious freedom.
Atheism isn't necessarily a monolith. I'd say that the majority of modern people (especially in the West) are atheist in practice. There isn't much magical thinking anymore and their religious position is a proxy for material politics. "God is dead and we have killed him" and "Religion is the opiate of the masses" are just other ways of saying that.
The group that's annoying are the ones that miss that point and take a full anti-theist approach because they do have a form of magical thinking (liberalism) that fails to place the religious consciousness of the masses into material reality.

idk maybe it's just because I'm in the deep south but that seems completely untrue to me. I'd say maybe half the people around me really truly believe the Christian God is responsible for every single thing that happens individually and things like physics are just illusions created by God choosing to do the same thing in the same situations every time. Then another like 45% of people either believe fully in some other religion or at least have some ridiculous superstition or non-specific "spiritual" belief, like astrology or believing in ghosts or whatever else. And that seems conservative to me, I wouldn't be surprised if fewer than 5% of people around me truly don't believe in any magic.
I'm in rural NC so there a lot of Christians here too lol. I just didn't feel like even the "devout" ones actually have the faith that they say they do. They have no thinking and instead are led entirely by materialist desires.
There's a few exceptions, but if you were to put a modern white protestant in front of a 16th century peasant they'd think they were the devil. There's a large immigrant population here that has a much more traditionally religious way of thinking, but the WASPs are functionally atheists.

Imo it has not decreased. It only seems that way because the explanations offered by the old religions have lost relevance in the modern world.
The function of religion is to explain our social existence. In the era of divine right, divinity itself must be explained, inevitably resorting to metaphysics. Now, under the right of private property, each person needs an explanation for their existence under capitalism: why some are wealthy and others are poor, why a medical emergency causes homelessness and starvation, why we send our children to war in distant countries that we never heard of, why we seem helpless to stop polluting and extracting and killing the planet.
This is why bourgeois forms of Christianity, like Protestantism and Mormonism, emerged. They claim to answer these new questions which Catholicism increasingly failed to, in a manner compatible with capitalism. They explain personal misfortune on the basis of individual failings and individual choices, mirroring the capitalist morality, which demands miserly behaviors, to keep converting money into capital, feeding the machine instead of feeding oneself.
Science and materialism resulted from the development of bourgeois productive forces and the seeking of relative surplus value. It is the great Enlightenment philosophers themselves who helped usher in these new forms of Christianity following the new social significance of the laws of physics. Scientists like Isaac Newton adopted deistic Christian attitudes, believing that God worked mechanically through the laws of nature, rather than violating those laws, but affirming a materialist conception of nature.
Bourgeois religion will exist as long as there is bourgeois society because bourgeois society is alienating and produces illusions. It is as magical as any religion, only dressed in false materialism.

The state is magical thinking. The value form is magical thinking. Commodity fetishism is (explicitly!) magical thinking. Capitalism is just as "magical" as any other class society; like all class societies it has declared its magic "real" and natural and all others "fake."

Don't forget sacrificing yourself and killing others in the name of atheism. Singing about atheism on airplanes for internet clout. Forcing friends and family to become atheists using emotional manipulation. Only voting for politicians that claim to be atheist never considering one that's not and being sure everyone knows why they have your vote.

Im culturally atheist but im no longer practicing
I was raised atheist but i don't always admit it because many of the public atheists are the most annoying people
I still feel obliged to celebrate on the High Holidays like Pi day or the Flying Spaghetti Monster day but im just going through the motions tbh
I was raised Atheist as well, but ended up becoming a weird Gnostic Christian-adjacent occultist who is very much theist.
It does seem rare for things to play out in that direction, I must admit.

tbf I have talked to some atheists who would do most of that if they could. Not that they are worst then christians...well most are not, the 4channer/redditors who use it as a mask for racism are, probably the type who would do those things if they could too.
I don't think they were using it as a mask. They were probably just an atheist and also hateful. Unfortunately some people still think they're smart because they got the right answer to one question.
