So, I forgot to tell the thing to stop getting this show. As a result, when the first ep of the new season dropped, it appeared and decided to watch it for a laugh.

I made it 11 minutes into it before shutting it down. Here's the breakdown:

Zoe Saldana in tight fitting athleisure gear working out while a supercut of cable news about how chaotic the world outside the US plays. 2-3 minutes

Zoe Saldana in the shower naked. very creepy lingering close up on mouths during her makeout session with husband. 2-3 minutes.

Incoherent exposition from good guy US Intelligentsia about how China is bad because communism is when US universities have chinese students. also foreigners studying in and paying tuition to US schools is just generally bad. 5-6 minutes.

Complex set piece action sequence of masked assailants kidnapping Zoe in broad daylight in DC. Very watchable if you like action sequences. 2-3 minutes.

Timeskip back 6 months: Several outrageously jacked dudes and models in undercover tight-fighting athleisure on a stakeout at a university. Intrigue with foreign national points to RUSSIA.

this is where i turned it off. the spycraft-intrigue was getting too convoluted to parse, and the idea that all these absurdly jacked meatheads in their 40s could blend into the backdrop of college students on campus despite all of them wearing an athleisure uniform of drab army colors was too much.

this show started out kinda dumb, premise wise, in season 1. and each season has become more deranged with the world building. it's like if they made a third sicario that was as divergently bonkers from sicario 2 as 2 was to 1. if that makes sense.

like imagine if you blended every alarmist headline on OAN about the world outside the US and constructed reality from that chopped, incoherent and undifferentiated goop of american exceptionalist excretions. with high production values, fancy establishing shots, and apparently a pretty big budget for complex action sequences with guns, explosions, civilian/military vehicles, equipment and fight choreography. like, they seriously build this world and it is scary/violent! if you meet someone who loves this show, they should be monitored.

it would be totally watchable if it wasn't 75-80% unwatchable exposition of randomly mixed crank politics, straight from the industrial blender at Banana Town.

Sheridan is that guy who makes shows for evil rural hogs about how evil rural hogs are cool and based actually and all the crimes and violence and misogyny they do is good, right?

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

i think they target evil suburban/exurban hogs by letting them imagine themselves as rural. i mean, seriously, it's impressive how many sequences take place in and around very high price point mcmansions and they seem to unironically feature as aspirational. like the heroes AND the clandestine terrorists live in them.

they use wide frame establishing shots of rural settings, for sure, but when you get to a house it's some jumbo luxury pastiche from the freshest bourgeois hell with all the turrets, lawyer foyers, downton abbey grade dining rooms, and a mutilated micro front porch.

EDIT: OK, i watched the rest of S03E01. fucking recockulous. i'll spare you all the play by play, but two things standout.

the second half of the episode involves The Team going to Ukraine to steal a russian guy in a bunker. this involves releasing attack dogs to maul North Korean soldiers. like 3 dogs kill probably a dozen DPRK troops in a trench, who are depicted as childish clowns that can't aim. they make it a point to show the dogs mauling koreans and pulling their bodies apart, multiple times. content warning, a dog gets stabbed but is evacuated. all non-US people are executed, even the unarmed, injured and surrendering. i guess this is supposed to be cool? sheridan also repeatedly wails this unarmed russian guy who has surrendered and is screaming in pain because it will apparently be easier to kidnap him if he's all fucked up, concussed, and scared. they do this before sloppily cutting a tracking device out of the guy's armpit, because apparently russia puts trackers into all their important dudes.

there's also an extended sequence of exposition where our boy, Taylor Sheridan, appears as "Cody" the old, super tactical genius special forces cia supersoldier in a battlefield bunker to explain to everyone how he's the only one who understands the tactics of the Ukraine-Russian border conflict so all the other tactical genius special forces cia supersoldiers must do whatever he says. they also have this amazing diorama/battlefield model with scale accurate structures set up where "Cody" explains how this cool op is going to go. apparently explosive drone swarm + attack dogs is the unstoppable combo. "Cody" being cool, explains that only he knows How Shit Is™ while exaggeratedly eating this grey goop-soup out of an unlabeled catfood tin and saying "brother" too much. i think he thinks it makes him look cool, like how brad pitt eats in scenes all the time to look casual compared to everybody else.

he cast himself in S02 as the same "old special forces soldier who knows everything" role as well, and it was legitimately the most self-indulgent b.s. i have ever seen in media. until this entire sequence in the first ep of S03.

seriously, most times a writer puts themselves into a story, they have the decency to make fun of themselves. this asshole is like, "no actually i'm the most coolest badass that u can't even dream to imagine."

what a fucking loser. i legitimately hope he takes a tumble on set during filming and breaks his entire shit.

That paragraph sums up Sheridan very well. At this point I assume he's eventually going to become a GOP pol. I'd be surprised if he doesn't do that.

I watched the first two seasons. I watched in the hopes it would be escapism for me. s01 was enjoyable. But s02 became tedious. Here are some notes I wrote for myself about an episode of s02.

The Iranians are working with the Chinese? Sheridan doesn't even try to create half decent bad guys. This is cartoon shit!

Positive stuff about DUBYA! Sheridan is a propagandist when it comes to the republicans.

Sheridan's prone to write unrealistic dialog. He tends to make everybody into a sarcastic badass or sarcastic wannabe badass. She's in the hospital recovering from her serious injury. Her doctor advises extreme care and caution in her physical actions. He says:

"All I'll say is... the devil's showin' aces. Think it through before you playin' your hand - you know what I mean?"

He sounded like a Marine or one of her CIA guys.

yeah, the way season 2 opened with a sitting congressperson being kidnapped seemingly by a cartel kill squad (that completely lit up her entire family as they slept) gave me this moment like, maybe it was going to unfold as some sort of call-is-coming-from-inside-the-house type of intelligentsia false flag move.

didn't take long to realize they were playing that angle straight up.

season 2 was so far off the rails, i thought i was having a stroke as i tried to interpret the geopolitical landscape.

I barely remember s02 at all. My biggest memory is that I started to get really annoyed by the silliness a few times (or a even bunch of times) every episode. If it's annoying it kills the escapism vibe. How many series is Sheridan currently working on right now. ~6? Could the number actually be 7? He's the chud whisperer - he can pump that stuff out at will. He's a one-man Chud Studios.

---
Ninja edit. Now that I'm thinking of it - s02 had a lot of way over-the-top unnaturallistic yelling. After it happened a few times - that was one more thing that irked me. The dialog was bad enough but THE YELLING turned it into shit and it wasn't bad enough to be funny. The following is made-up but it's the vibe I had...

"YOU THINK YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES!"

"YEAH! I GOT WHAT IT TAKES!"

"NAH! YOU DON'T GOT WHAT IT TAKES! YOU ONLY THINK YOU DO!"

A spy thriller that follows the leader of a CIA team that enlists female operatives, who are known as Lionesses, to go undercover in the war on terror.

Taylor Sheridan

So this is the slop stew of part-of-history distilled liberalism. Zoe really knows how to pick her projects.

yeah, it sucks because she's obviously incredibly talented and brings real energy and intense physicality to the most patently absurd project. like of course part of the ongoing B-plot is that this is her career and she's a career woman juggling/trying to "have it all" (happy kids+actualized spouse+professional success). so it's like a 90s sitcom, except Murphy Brown, in this case, is suddenly jumping on an unmarked state department jet to go kick in doors with some kill squad doing assassinations in Iran or Mexico or whatever. will she make it home to have dinner with the family? her hubby made sloppy joes!

also, nicole kidman is in it as an agency spymaster.

part of the absurdity is the waste of talent and resources to tell a spy-thriller story aimed at jibbering bozos.

I'm surprised someone as observant and critical as you managed to watch 3 seasons of this Paramount/Sheridan slop. I couldn't even make it through the trailer. It reminds me of all those high budget DoD propaganda "prestige drama" shows that Amazon pumps out that all blend together in my mind.

[-] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

well, to be clear,

  • only 2 seasons + 1 episode
  • i had just finished a series yeaterday and was browsing my "recently added" for something around 1 hr to watch real quick. i made it 12 minutes and then went back to work. later i realized it was still paused so i decided to see where it went.

anyway, yeah it blows im not proud of my ability to sit through true garbage.
