Been wondering that after playing Undertale Yellow (great game, btw)

Romhacks would fall into a different category, more like modding the main game.

Pokemon Unbound is far more than a mod to its base game (Fire Red), it’s basically its own GBA game. Not sure I’d say the Pokemon scene is the best but I wanted to call that romhack out for how good it is

Yeah, I excluded romhacks because the sheer amount of pokemon ones would dominate the comments, either them, Super Mario or Mega Man

I also saw from Pokemon Unbound's release post that they use "FireRed Upgrade" which is a considerable work on top of the original

Like would you recommend playing it?

Definitely worth a playthrough imo

Zelda Classic (now ZQuest Classic) has made it pretty accessible to create a zelda fangame. Although the engine started as a basic Zelda 1 clone, it's matured quite a bit with a lot of new features and now even has its own scripting language. I've spent a lot of time playing some great creations and even made a few of my own.

what's the thing with Undertale Yellow? i don't know much about fangames.

It's one of the rare cases of a fangame that actually gets finished and is good. The soundtrack alone is worth a playthrough. If you enjoyed Undertale, UTY will feel like a game that fits perfectly in. It works as a prequel and you're the yellow soul kid (fully non canon, though the pacifist ending could work as canon)

I had a great time playing Undertale, I actually played it straight through again right after to get the pacifist ending because I was so, thrown by the implications at the end of the normal game.
