128GB DDR4 3080TI rig from 2022 still going strong, I feel I timed this well.

This must be what it feels like to have bought a house in the 1970s

[-] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I bought my somewhat high-end PC in late 2025, two months before RAMageddon. Two people advised me against it. They said it wasn't a good time to buy because prices were already a bit high. I'm glad I didn't follow their advice.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

I bought my machine a week before the true ramocalypse. Prices were high, and 128GB of RAM was like 30% of my budget already, but literally the following week prices rose to the point that I would not have been able to afford any of that

Fuck AI

And those of us with servers pray every day a stick won't fail. But at least people can talk to robots and make slop on demand...

My NAS is starting to act up and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I've got it all backed up but it's basically deep cold storage (hard drive at a friend's house in a different state). When it goes I'm cooked.

[-] Dultas@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah a drive failure is my biggest worry now. 12TB drives aren't cheap. Luckily I got an extra when prices started going up as a warm backup.

Decommissioned VM host my company was getting ready to toss out.

It's all DDR4, but even that shit is expensive now.

People who built 32+gb ram systems in 2026:

[-] mechoman444@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Back in '22 I bought 64gb of ram because I wanted to have all my slots populated. For aesthetic purposes.

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Yup that's pretty much me.. "Well I've got these ports and RAM isn't expensive so let's go!"

Haven't yet needed it really but it's nice to know it's there.

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago

I have three 32gb ddr5 PCs, trying to sell one for $600 but crypto bros keep offering $350 because "Chatgpt said so"

Price is 900 for mentioning ai

256 GB DDR4 here, kinda considering selling some of it now...

[-] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago

Your RAM accidentally became a retirement fund.

[-] volore@scribe.disroot.org 18 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Wow, what'd you get all that for? Opening 5+ Chrome tabs?

[-] Yoddel_Hickory@piefed.ca 16 points 4 days ago

The pc (server) was used, and the seller asked 100$ to double it from 128 GB to 256 GB.

More space for CFD and path tracing, and for personnal projects. Also it's fun to install games to a ramdisk for a laugh.

[-] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 7 points 4 days ago

...and to finally install all the Cities Skylines and Rimworld mods.

I live in fear one of the memories will stop working

[-] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I've lost a lot more than one.

I can't quite figure out the timeline of the jobs I've had. Memories of things that happened on those jobs don't line up with when I think I was on the jobs. I feel like I have the order all mixed up.

Recently, I was trying to remember the name of one of my old girlfriends. I can picture her clearly, but her name is gone. It will probably come to me at some point.

This is shit you think about when you get old. If you want to remember these things, start a journal, and keep it. You think you can't possibly forget, but you do.

(Yeah, I know you meant memory sticks.)

Bought 128 gb DDR4 and a 7900 XT... that system quite literally sits in my basement as my main driver is a Linux laptop with an external monitor. So busy with work and school that gaming took a backseat.

[-] Xylight@lemdro.id 17 points 4 days ago

I can take it off your hands if you wanna clear up some space in your basement ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

[-] Fizz@lemmy.nz 10 points 4 days ago

Dont tell me you also brought storage while it was cheap. At least lie and say you got cooked on that.

I got a 12 GB RAM S10...

...not long after, I hear the news that the new flagships will have 12 GB RAM instead of 16 that were planned.

The value sure went up.

[-] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

64Gb gang shout out!

Edit: Its now an investment!

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago

I bought a 22 tb drive the very day that dumb orangutan first threatened tarrifs. The price has more than doubled since then.

You can just about store every season of the Simpsons on that thing.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 2 points 2 days ago

As one of those people I am decided not interesting in being represented by that...

[-] chris@l.roofo.cc 2 points 2 days ago

I still have 32 GB of DDR in my drawer from when I upgraded to 64. I am too afraid to sell it because my current ram might break.

[-] eestileib@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 days ago

I did my rebuild before January 2025 cause I thought DJT was going to fuck up world trade, I underestimated how shitty the AI Bros are.

I have 16GB of VRAM too, baybee.

[-] fenrasulfr@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I have a glorious 32GB of overclocked DDR3, how lucky am I.

[-] cosmos8188@leminal.space 1 points 2 days ago

Look at Mr moneybags over here..

[-] fenrasulfr@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I know right! Honnestly the 32gb of ddr3, 4790k and a new graphics card (switched from a 970 to a rx7600 is got for cheap) is still surprisingly capable of running games.

[-] Killer57@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

I got rather lucky with my purchase timing, tho I was just getting more RAM to deal with my 1300 Firefox tabs.

[-] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 14 points 4 days ago

Grieve with me, I just lost a ram stick so it's down to 24. Possibly less depending on my Asrock's ability to manage 3 instead of 2 pairs

I hate myself for thinking that "no, I don't need an upgrade just because, I'm fine with what I have" one year ago (and I was also hesitant because of the dying CPUs on AM5). 32 ain't cutting it for me any more, I'm aiming for 96 or 128, but definitely not before this whole thing blows over.

[-] Sludge@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Yeah... I built my wife a machine with 64 GB of RAM in ~October of 25 right before the prices spiked. Really kicking myself for not going all in and building a NAS setup at that same time. I can't realistically bring myself to purchase 4tb hard drives or ram at this point - it's too damn expensive.

64GB DDR5 and a Rx 7800 xt and 2TB m.2 for less than 1k before windows cut off win10 support. I use it for streaming and factorio and arch isos
