Are they going to ban smarphones too?

[-] Lumisal@lemmy.world 6 points 14 hours ago

It's much harder to secretly record someone in any decent quality with a smartphone than with a pair of glasses where you just have to look would be my guess.

That and smartphones have multiple other uses.

I mean the outrage over smart glasses based on meta selling your data is valid, but the outrage over "perverts recording women" is about as justified as the outrage over "transwomen sexually abusing women in women's spaces". Sure it happens, but not nearly as often as it is made out to be.

If we are wrong to tar all trans people with the same brush because of the actions of a few creeps, we ought to be wrong to do so with people who enjoy smart glasses. I don't own them, but if you had shown me an open source pair of glasses that basically gave me the ability to scan my surroundings for shit I had lost, turn mundane tasks like doing the washing up into video games and record action footage from my bike rides, I would probably buy some.

yeah but the outrage over it makes lemmy posters feel smug and superior and lets them indulge in violent fantasies of beating people up. plus you know, facebook makes them and anyone who uses any product by them is clearly a terrible awful bad person, and not a morally upstanding person, or something. they also love to fantasize about assaulting cybertruck drivers.

because you know nobody can have a legitimate reason for purchasing, using, or enjoying either of these products. they're all just creepy weirdos or something.

you see it's only bad when other folks judge and justify violence against groups of people for how they look or how they dress or what they own. when I, a very brave linux using heroic user of the fediverse, do that, it's all good and justified and correct.

I mean I have been using Linux since before Ubuntu was a thing, but I don't share most of the views you suggest. Am I the problem? Should I embrace violence and outrage? Would that make me happier?

Eh, I'd rather we ban smart glasses and also smart phones. Or establish better protocols to banning photos by default, unless consent is given.

Yeah, good luck banning smart phones. Are you just a Luddite? I mean I get that smart phones have atrociously problematic aspects to them, but they have been the single most impactful invention of this century and most of our daily life is built around it.

*Pervert glasses

Would a hidden body cam be okay to bring, or is it all "secret filming" that is outlawed during this highly recorded event in a televised venue?

[-] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 23 hours ago

Nothing wrong with filming, it is the secret part that is the problem.

So yes, a hidden body cam is also not welcome.

Hell yeah! Now we just have to ban them from everywhere else, all of the time!
