The ghost, it haunts me. Every morning at 3am.
"IT'S BRITNEY BITCH"
Ma'am I know you're dead but it isn't 2002 anymore.
Clarification for those OOTL. Aus had a test alert for their new national emergency warning system AusAlert, and it shouldn't say "Presidential alert", not for Australia at least. Older or alternative mobile OS will display an American or International default heading, The intended heading is "CRITICAL AUSALERT"
"Presidential Alert"
Not only is it wrong, but the name of the warning is stupid.
Not that "Prime Minister Alert" would have been better.
No, better to use something a bit more generic, here are some examples:
"National Alert"
"Class 5 Alert - Imminent danger!"
"Government Alert"
"Weather Alert"
"Wildfire Alert"
"Public Health Alert"
"Presidential Alert" just sounds like a Trumpism, as if he was too good for normal alerts, and he "only responds to the most beautiful 'Presidential Alerts' presented on paper with gilded borders..."
The name comes from the US WARN act through the US FCC, and originally they did call the top level alert the "Presidential Alert", but this was changed in the meantime. Now it stands at these categories:
WEA alerts only cover critical emergency situations. Consumers can receive four types of alerts:
- "National Alerts" issued by the President of the United States or the Administrator of FEMA;
- "Imminent Threat" alerts involving imminent threats to safety or life;
- "AMBER Alerts" about missing children; and
- "Public Safety Messages" conveying recommendations for saving lives and property.
Participating carriers may allow subscribers to block all but National Alerts.
This system was implemented using Cell Broadcast system which is standardized internationally. But I guess since the big US carriers were forced to implement WEA the strings from the US version made it into Android. So now some old versions of software may still show the old US specific text, even when used internationally.
No need to take it so seriously, it’s a shitpost. The actual message said Critical AusAlert, not Presidential Alert.
Ah, that explains it, thank you!
Yeah having a President is news for sure!
Are your newspapers also hyping up the spectre of nuke-based death at the moment?
They did this in the UK a few years ago, tested it after about 2 weeks of solid front-pages of putins face with headlines like "I'll bomb London first chance I get".
Scared the shit out of us.
no. we have other issues here.
Kinda ticks me off that android has an amber alert built in, which only exist on one country on this planet
Yeah, I'm trying to see why that ticks you off and failing. If it ticks you off that other alerts aren't built in, that I could understand. But being upset that the feature is there for the country it exists in..? I don't get it. Not being antagonistic, I'm legitimately curious. Do our amber alerts sound off in Germany or the UK, and people are put out by it? Because over here, they only go off if you're within proximity. I assume there are alerts for other countries that we don't get. If the UK had some mauve alert to tell locals that a dangerous animal has escaped the zoo or something, I can't imagine how that would impact me. But I don't know enough about tech. Are there like a limited number of alert types possible on the OS, and our amber alert is taking up a slot that could be used by a more generic alert?
OK
