I discovered about Lemmy and Piefed devs opinions and views which i not agree with¹, so i was thinking of using Mbin², i looked in to join mbin website and idk what to choose, there is a big instance which i want to avoid³ and idk if the smaller ones are stable, any suggestion?

1 Piefed is also made with Python which isn't the fastest language and i hate reading python codebases lmao

2 Please don't tell me that the devs are nazis or smth 😭

3 joining a big instance kinda defeat the purpose of the fediverse tbh

The Lemmy devs are pretty good at keeping their politics out of the codebase and reserved for the running of their own instance, so I personally don't really see a massive reason to abandon the software. If you don't want to deal with .ml it's the same procedure on Mbin as it is on any minor Lemmy instance: just block and move on.

Also if you move to Mbin you'll have to deal with the fact that you must now refer to meme shitposts as "articles" in "magazines".

Neither /kbin nor MBin call(ed) image post an "article" And an unpopular opinion: "magazine" fits more as name for sub than "community". Especially when all content is posted just by one used for own, curiosity, entertainmment or something.

makes more sense when you think of 'magazine' as a thing that contains things - bullets, articles, goods (seen shops round my way called magazin romanesc), etc

the polish language kbin instance was called karab.in (think carbine as in rifle) so magazine makes sense in that context too

Considering we have seen the Tesseract and Piefed gone fell to less honourable ends in a much faster fashion, the Lemmy devs are pretty much modern saints in comparison. They've sorta-deserved the wait-out.

The source code is open and they are highly dependent on funding from users and NLNet. Lemmy's API is easy to replicate, so even if it's not so easy to say "just fork it", it would be pretty straightforward to have other projects implementing compatibility layers.

Fedia.io is the largest, though if choosing an Italian one is important to you, agora.energieincomune.com appears to be hosted there. The downside of using Mbin is that Interstellar is the only app to support it.

Anyway, i'il look in to them and see which is the most "stable" one, without counting fedia.io (See 3 on the post)

You can use a combination of stability and age - Uptime and Months, columns #2 & 7 in the linked webpage. High uptime % in a well-established, long-running instance is the best.

One thing to note is that the implementation language matters significantly less than the method of handling database accesses. According to the sh.itjust.works admin team who announced an upcoming migration from Lemmy to PieFed this year, Lemmy's handing (which used to be fairly crappy, requiring routine machine reboots rather than solving the issue of leakages) has recently gotten much better.

Another reason PieFed performs so well is that it is 25-fold more efficient in pulling data from its servers than Lemmy. That is a design choice that hopefully one day Lemmy will catch up to making also.

Thus, the choice of back-end language - Rust vs. Python - is much less relevant than all of the other factors involved. Although it does result in very noticeable downstream effects, particularly the increased speed of adding new features.

I would even go so far as to say that the choice of software itself - PieFed vs. Lemmy, or Mbin, nodeBB, Mastodon integration, even mostly-dead (though reportedly undergoing revival!!) projects like Sublinks - works out to offer far less of an impact to your overall experience than the choice of admin team. e.g. the .world and .zip teams both offer both Lemmy and PieFed options, and if you use something like Voyager (which only offers "experimental" support for PieFed), then you will barely notice the difference.

Your other questions are answered already but I hope this additional information has been of interest as well.

Edit: another consideration is whether you want to host your own instance. For that I would unhesitatingly recommend PieFed as by far the easiest to deploy (especially via the docker container) and using least resources. Tbf, that is not from 1st-hand experience but so very many reports of others do state this.

That was a nice comment, thank you! I didn't knew the database implementation of lemmy was so much worse than piefed one, though, i doubt i am gonna switch to piefed because of some opnions that the devs have and i don't want to support

That's not something i am gonna do (for now!) because i just don't have the hardware, though, i once tried to make a lemmy instance and it was such a mess!

Used to be worse yeah, although again, it might be better now? And it was fixable by just rebooting every so often.

Overall people say both that the code written by the PieFed devs is much higher quality... while others say the exact opposite, so I have no idea:-P.

I hope you are happy with Mbin. At the very least it's nice to have options to choose from. I don't really like Mbin personally - nothing against the project but the web UI is much better suited to Mastodon-style content (like with long titles that wrap around the screen so don't waste that horizontal space) than to like cat pics with super-short, maybe even one-word titles. And it has odd terminology and procedures like upvotes exist but they don't affect sorting like they do in Lemmy and that is rather done by "increases", which I guess are somewhat like Mastodon "boosts"? (I've never used Mastodon so I have no idea) Also, those are publicly visible whereas the downvote equivalent "reduces" are hidden from view. So... it will take quite some getting used to!!

Or contribute to the development of Interstellar, Blorp, Voyager, Thunder, etc. Honestly most people here seem to use 3rd-party apps rather than a web browser UI, which I've never really understood exactly why but I'm just saying that they do.

No MBin instance is flagship one. Largest 3 of them are:

made by a Mastodon instance admin (infosec.exchange). (Several other Mastodon admins tried to run a /kbin instance too. All shared the fate of forum.fail, fitting its name :D)
Spanish, a relative latecomer
by Interstellar dev.

MBin devs' instances are smaller
