It really depends where you live. In the sticks, sure, but not in a city where you live in an apartment with a grand total of one (1) window
I mean yeah I think most people understand that gardening requires access to some soil.
But I do most of my gardening in a local community garden so there are options in the city.
we planted ~8 strawberry plants. And when they first started fruiting, the squirrels got the first two. So I put mesh covers over them. But then the bees weren't pollenating them anymore so we just had strawberry flowers, no fruits. So I took the mesh off, and the rabbits/deer ate all the flowers... and the rest of the plants.
You didn't think of maybe using a mesh size that lets through bees, but not squirrels? :D
My garden would give me a huge yeild if I could shoot off some of the deer. Damn pests, almost tame and keep to gardens eating my berries, plants and content of bird feeder. But this being a residential area hunting here is "frowned upon" understandably.
Crossbows can stop deer without all that racket and gunpowder smoke.
Need to hunt down the neighbours first, then nobody can frown upon hunting deer anymore.
I learned that many states allow you to keep/claim roadkill if you have a tag.
Just saying, if you happen to runover a few deer, its not quite hunting, but your plants are safe and the freezer is full of venison. Win/win.
You’ll want to install a well built brush guard and bumper before attempting this. Also deer fencing is a thing that most people in rural areas resort to for their gardens.
Urine can help drive them off, we used to deal with them always eating mom’s flowers.
This is great news for my four year old son who has just discovered the joy of peeing standing up. And has already done his part in the garden several times :)

No no, even if you manage to grow nothing but dust in year one, a depressed tomato in year two, three measly leaves of parsley in year three - each bit you managed to grow yourself not only tastes better but also unlocks better veggies in the next year! This is a learning curve that is absolutely worth it, please don't give up.
But wasn't skipping avocado toast the secret sauce for owning a home with garden? Where do I even start cultivating squirrel food, if I have no home and garden?

And it wasn't just strawberries.... I planted a raspberry bush too.
I planted a raspberry bush a few years ago on a strip of unused leftover nothing land in the neighborhood. Neighborhood kids loved the bush and ate the berries. Birds loved it and ate the berries. Some old hag hated it ("looks untidy!!!") and sneakily had the bush removed (it's not her land either) although she knew damn well who had planted it and that kids and birds loved it.
Nature isn’t clean or tidy you shouldn’t be bringing that mess into the community. Only pavement and paid fruits are to be available for play and snacking.

Strawberries are a bad example. Those guys want to live as long as your soil is good. I get around 5 bowls per year and growing so maybe like 50-100 strawbs and yes, half of them go to squirrels.
That makes them a great example. This person spent hundreds and couldn't even grow strawberries.
I think food gardening depends a lot on luck. With the right combination of plant+spot+local (micro)climate+how often you water your plants, you can almost accidentally end up with a huge amount of whatever you're growing.
And then you invest all the money you saved on food into one (1) trendy stock, cryptocoin etc. and make cents out of dollars.
Never had any luck growing carrots because our soil is such heavy clay. But I chucked a few potato skins near my budgies' graves when the compost bin was full and even after digging the plants up the first year, they just keep growing back and as long as I water them, they provide a decent harvest without any effort.
If I bought proper seed potatoes to grow, they probably wouldn't.

Growing your own food is like printing money, BUT you need to know what you are doing.
It's absolutely luck if you don't know what you're doing, which is most people. Also, changing the local microclimate is possible to a degree, but depending on how much you need to change it, it's too expensive. Depending on where you live and what crops you're trying to grow, even water might be an issue that pushes it into "infeasible".
They also brought the "tossed salad" back into the mainstream. That's pretty cool
