Internet atheism is so back

[-] Hestia@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago

I didn't really keep up on the Atheist scene after I hit my 20s, got a bit more concerned about capitalism than religion.

Glad he's one of the good ones

got a bit more concerned about capitalism than religion.

It's totally fair not to follow this stuff and I mostly don't either, but I do think it's worth noting at least for the better ones that a lot of this is about Christianity (mostly evangelicalism in the case of the US) being used as a vector for imperialist projects, from missionary campaigns to Israel, so I don't think a dichotomy can really be drawn between capitalism and religion.

That's where my understanding is now, from what I can remember most of the channels I used to watch back in the day didn't really delve into those things which is why I don't pursue that content anymore.

american dominionism is both

[-] RedWizard@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

Funny, I didn't realize his channel was about atheism. I discovered him from this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uOAYMRBVDxk which about halfway through he talks about Granada and its history.

Holy shit. He's mentioned going on a political journey and becoming more aware a few times but this fucking whips to see. I will have to watch this when I have a chance, I find him (them? Am I misremembering that he's not cis?) quite good to watch even if he rarely says anything groundbreaking. Just seems like a genuinely nice person.

He reminds me of myself, in a sense. I'm a bit older and wasn't really educated on trans people. I just kind of thought of using people's pronouns/acknowledging their gender identity as a polite thing to do, even if (in my understanding at the time) it wasn't "literally true" that people had their claimed gender identity. Finding out I was wrong was, genuinely, a relief. I didn't like "lying" a whole lot but certainly thought it was better than hurting people by refusing to talk to and about them the way they needed so learning that people's identities are legit was great. I feel like GMS has expressed similar sentiments.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago

An internet atheist? Getting mad at societal issues and not the Wamens or Bideo Bames? DEMONETISED!

It's too bad the context of the clip is so racist and steeped in imperial propaganda because Fred Armisen delivers it hilariously.

[-] miz@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

well said. the bit still being funny despite those aspects is proof of his comedic ability

He's been pretty based for a while.

Is it weird that I think he looks like a young queer Robert Picardo

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 8 points 1 day ago

Nah

Not quite Picardo, but I can't quite put my finger on who he does remind me of

Gonna drive me nuts until I remember

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

A bit of young Colin Firth?

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I see it!

[-] CommCat@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

I thought he was an Anarchist? Is he turning into a Marxist Leninist?

I might self describe as an anarcho-communist and i have of course read Lenin and taken a lot out of that. Just like Marx, Engels, Mao or Luxemburg he's somebody you should engage with if you want to have correct takes about politics, these require a historical and matrialist analysis of class relations.

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

Well, he's reading

[-] Blakey@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

If he's reading Lenin he's on the right track anyway.
