I helped fund that! The writing was unnecessary and I said so at the time

Did someone also really want to put their favourite Linux distro on it as well?

lmfao I just realized it's spelled out like a name, hence the dot.

I love how unimpressed the kids look.

They're not used to having cameras pointed at them

Sidebar, if anyone wants to contribute to make this happen on Lemmy let me know. There are many places around here that would greatly benefit from a well or rainwater collection, particularly schools.

[-] nullspace@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

How much did the whole thing cost?

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 day ago

Which place do you refer to? I could help similarly in the Philippines where we (my small companies) already do some charity work.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 day ago

I live mostly in Tanzania and there's a lot of schools here who don't have access to clean water.

[-] Cybersec@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Wow great work! That’s awesome

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Haven't done much yet personally although I'm working on it. Hopefully next year have some things set up.

[-] Cybersec@piefed.social 2 points 23 hours ago

That’s cool, these projects can be pricier or require more resources than one would think. Over here we’re saving up for a water treatment system for the whole neighborhood.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

Definitely drilling a well is often substantially pricey, otherwise the tank and drainage from a roof is fairly common here and the drainage can always be done with scrap material in a pinch.

[-] Cybersec@piefed.social 1 points 23 hours ago

Hmm with the know how digging a well doesn’t have to be pricey, we did it here ourselves with just labor and pipes and ingenuity. Took several days and backbreaking work ( we had to spin and grind through some rock) but there is a way. Ask beyond commercial quotes and do it like countryside people do and can get one. (Once you have it though still gotta pay for the well pump and all, I more it’s not completely cheap but possible)

The pricier thing daunting me is the advanced water treatment system that’s at global standards.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago

How many meters did you dig?

[-] Cybersec@piefed.social 1 points 15 hours ago

It was a while ago I don’t remember exactly, I’d guess 10 meters? We are admittedly in a low area in a wet space so it’s probably about as easy of a location as could be imagined.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

Alright that makes more sense. The wells I've seen aren't being dug by anyone by hand although there are most definitely locations like that which are typically used for farming.

Kids on the left are catching on to westerners...

First you saved us to market Catholicism, and now Atheism!? Why can y'all just "be" and exist and do good deeds without advertising!? ...and you all called yourselves "woke"!

[-] golden@sh.itjust.works 32 points 2 days ago

tbf, China has been the lesser evil recently, so it's not surprising that they're more well liked. That said, them being less scummy has more to do with strategy than ethical considerations.

[-] HrabiaVulpes@europe.pub 4 points 14 hours ago

China at the moment is a bit like Valve. Is Valve perfect? Fuck no! But all others constantly shoot themselves in the foot. In the same way China can simply not change, while US president is looking for a new low to put himself in.

as much as I hate Christianity, they do a LOT of good like this. They give food to the homeless, assist local animal shelters, countless beach cleanups, etc. Helping others is a big thing Christianity teaches, good Samaritan and all.

Hell, the one my dad goes to combined with like 10 other churches of various religions and peer pressured the mayor into DRASTICALLY lowering gun violence last year and are working to lower rent this year (so far down 6% on average).

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 10 hours ago

i feel like that line from one of the MIB movies applies: A church is good, churches are corrupt. Or something like that.

[-] M137@lemmy.today 2 points 22 hours ago

Hating orhers is also a big thing Christianity teaches. And no, not only in the sense that many use it to spread hate, it specifically teaches hate no matter how you see it.

[-] __Lost__@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

How did they peer pressure the mayor into drastically lowering gun violence?

[-] nylo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 day ago

obviously the mayor was the one committing all the gun violence

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
