The People Are Not Enough (danieltutt.substack.com)

one mr derrick varn and daniel tutt published a book about (somewhat) populism, this is a response to a review by some dsa afficionados. it’s rather straightforwardly written though (and faster that listening to promo podcasts) so you don’t need to engage with a review, but can get the gist of the book argument. the book would be great when i yo-ho-ho it in couple of years, hopefully

*as a side note, it’s just pathetic that everything is on substack

OK this pamphlet was an interesting read. In some ways it was something I already understood, but does provide a historical origin of American Left-Populism. I'll probably want to go through and read some of the referenced material though, since the authors seldom quoted these references directly.

Their ultimate prognosis is that, due to the fracturing, atomization, and "lumpenizing" of the Proletariat in the imperial core, that much work needs to be done to build socialist (Marxist) institutions that can aid in the rebuilding and reconnecting of the Proletariat, so as to build a more substantial proletarian culture. One where we can take the grief and grievances of the atomized and direct them towards these institutions, instead of into the void of populism. That populism (both Left and Right) are reactionary, tailist, political theory's that reject the core contradiction between wage labor and capital, and as a result limit the landscape of possibilities to that of existing liberal institutions and capitalist parties.

I'll have to spend some time going back over each section and giving them a more careful read. I don't know if I have a fully realized oppion on the writing.

i think it’s more to the inherent bonapartism of anything right or left populism: one charismatic figure appearing over the cracks, but due to nature of government fundamentally serving porky, and thus being useless to the left. the right can take bonapartism easily, it’s not even devils bargain it’s just a bargain for them, outside of peron, i don’t think those schismatic figures ever threatened capital as a whole.

obama or trump don’t threaten capital, they just redistribute factions, but same goes for potential bernie presidency. while leftists will get impeded at every turn, if they try to wield the power for real (i include shady whispers of positions in ngo after retirement as a real impedance in this, not just quiet sabotage from professionals), like syriza

Anyone read this Geese Magazine the author's are responding to? What's the political outline there, took a quick glance on the front page and it seems a little squishy to me but I'm not sure what it's about. Never heard of it before.

seemed like squishy socdems who think they've discovered holy grail (impressions from twitter mainly)

Yeah I wish there was less substack going around... But this was a interesting read, putting this book on the "too read" list.

The book (according to my Kobo) is only 80 pages so should be a quick read!
