Neat! An animal picture from Santa Cruz that isn't a butterfly, giant slug, or... You know... vampires.

wait, vampires? i've seen the shadow people in those hills. is that what they were?

also, in the middle of the night that night a few leaves fell on the rain fly of the tent and i had my wife convinced they were slugs. because i was convinced they were slugs and i'm a very convincing person. it was a good camping trip.

No, no, those are just the albinos.

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Well yeah the leaves were white I guess you know the site and tree we camped under?

It's one thing I could never stomach about Santa Cruz... all the damned vampires..

No idea what type, but it had the classic low hoo hoo. It was darker than the photo lets on.

My guess was a Great Horned from the overall shape and the color of the facial disc. The low classic hoot is going to be them.

My dude, THANK YOU. My wife and i were wondering. I played the first hoot offa this and my wife (currently playing Stardew across the room) said "OUR OWL FRIENDS!" so i'm pretty sure you identified them for us :3

I’ve heard them while camping at a SC beach!

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

south carolina or santa cruz? we need more two letters to have that few two letter acronyms

[-] proudblond@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Sorry Santa Cruz, thought it was obvious since that’s where you were but I guess this community is not location-based at all! My bad.

oh no worries, i just travel a bit for work, didn't want to assume you were here.

these beaches are great camping spots, no?

also you're not married to a lumpy dude, are you? your username is pretty close to what my wife would choose and i don't like combing through people's comments.

[-] proudblond@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I mean my hubby isn’t thin (we’re in our 40s) but I’m not sure I’d call him lumpy, ha! My username is quite old, from when I was in high school and got mad when people would tell me blonde jokes, as I’d feel they were making fun of me. It’s from an era when AIM only allowed ten characters 😂

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

if you wouldn't call him lumpy, it's not me (surgical scars gave me some fun new lumps). no worries. my wife is a proud blonde too, and she uses similar reasoning to yours around blonde jokes. for some reason (i wonder why) it's never a blond joke.

we like the one where (forgive the horrible delivery) there's a blonde hopping alongside the railroad tracks chanting 34! 34! 34! and a brunette stops and just stares and stares until she gets hit by a train and the blonde starts chanting 35! 35! 35!

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Nice! Glad to be of assistance.

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Ooo what perfect camping company! I'm happy you got to spot one!

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

there were at least two, but my phone was all the way off and it took time to get the camera on

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I'm just happy when people actually get to spot them in person. That's a feat in itself.

If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.
