A question for people whose jobs or general lifestyle leads you to move around from place to place. What are some places you find yourself looking for first? And by that I mean, when I move I always ask myself:

  • Where's my Taco bell (I'm American yes)
  • Where's my Walmart (Still definitely American)
  • Where's my job What are some of the first places you always find yourself looking for in a new area first?

Generally in this order:

Where am I sleeping? Where am I shitting? Where am I showering? Where can I get food? What are fun things to see in the area?

  1. Good cheap hole in the wall restaurant. Preferably, mexican, indian, japanese, korean.

  2. Good grocery & bakery

  3. Good cafe.

  4. Good proximity to work so little to no commuting.

  5. Nice place to go for walks at night.

Provided I already know where I will sleep and take care of my little person:

  • Chemist/pharmacy, as I need daily medications without which, after a too short while, there won't be much of me left.
  • Public libraries, and also bookshops (new/used).
  • A place where I can sit at a table and be left alone to work, if I fancy so.
  • Some cool places I can walk to? (parks, art galleries, museums, chess club, any kind of cool places). Walking is my friend and I will walk as much as I can. So, I like to find cool new places I can walk to. If there are no cool place, I will just walk around.
  • Office supply. My job happens between the tip of a pen(cil) and a sheet of paper, and if I always have spares with me I prefer having options.
  • If the place I live at provides no meal (handmade cooking, not some microwave junk) I will either:
look for a restaurant offering actual food (non hyper-processed shit).
look for a grocery store selling fresh/bio/locally sourced if at all possible, food that I can cook myself. A big plus if I can also find artisanal cheese (yes, I'm French).
  • Artisanal bakery selling handmade bread/pastries. Industrial bread should be declared illegal and a crime (see my previous remark about cheese ;)
  • A nice café/pub. Nice as in 'this is some quiet and comfy place (without too loud music/tv, I'm 100% fine with people chatting, like actually chatting not the yelling drunkard kind) that sells great coffee and/or tea' (even though I'm French, I've not touched alcohol in the last 30 years, and have zero desire to change that).

usually AYCE buffets first, then local supermarkets.

then general wandering around my town or city to see what looks cool, open-air markets, mom and pop restaurants and the like.

In (decending) order of importance:

  • where do I park to sleep?

  • where is the coffee shop?

  • where is a gym that is not the dungeons of Planet Fitness?

  • where is the Laundromat?

  • where is a better coffee shop?

  • where is a better Laundromat?

As a Dutch for me its quit simple. Where can I get coffee, beer, bread and groceries I can walk or cycle to

Nomads. That's not how apostrophes work.

I haven't been a digital nomad 17 years, but my usual was:

  1. Simplest way of getting to the airport? Not for leaving permanently, but my job required it.
  2. Where can I hang all day, chilling on my laptop? Bonus points if they sell beer
  3. Good safe and cheap place for parking my car long-term
