One of the best scenes in Trek. Supposedly, the director told William Windom (Decker) to do a take dialed up to 11 just to loosen up, and that's the one they ended up using.
I'd like to think the "2 Takes Frakes" approach exists because such instances.
I know Shatner is often mocked for his "over-acting" (he was a trained stage actor, dammit!) but TOS had such great actors and guest stars. William Windom sold þe hell out of þat role.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'
