If you think corporate owned social media will ever be anything but a constant downhill ride, I got a bridge to sell ya.

[-] paraphrand@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

woof. Why can’t platforms just be themselves.

Also, Twitter tried this under Elon and recently changed their minds after, I assume, it didn’t work out like they had hoped?

[-] M33@piefed.world 11 points 3 hours ago

Let’s cut the bullshit and start a $3.99 subscription already

We all know this is how it will end

[-] TheFogan@programming.dev 7 points 2 hours ago

I mean, it could just get sold to a massive advertising tracking and data pushing company. Or at this rate the FCC will find some BS statute to accuse it for and find a way to give it to Musk or Elison.

[-] philanthropicoctopus 12 points 3 hours ago

I'm ok with Lemmy, thanks

[-] brokenwing@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain

[-] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

This is a subtly good thing for the fediverse, assuming they are able to draw people away from Reddit. Divide and conquer.

[-] dil@lemmy.zip 11 points 5 hours ago

Once ppl are comfortable using one alternative they'll feel comfortable using others

[-] HobbitFoot 11 points 3 hours ago

Or they'll just stick with what they got.

[-] joyjoy@piefed.social 6 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Like they'd ever use ActivityPub instead of their own ATProtocol.

[-] mrmaplebar@fedia.io 7 points 4 hours ago

That's not what I mean. It's breaking up the centralization and Reddit's hegemony in general that's good for smaller platforms like ours

[-] Grostleton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 hours ago

Lemmy think it over and I'll get back to ya.

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago

PieFed and Mbin are also perfectly good.

[-] IllNess@infosec.pub 41 points 6 hours ago

Running out of ideas and the flow of users are slowing down.

[-] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 23 points 6 hours ago

The place quickly turned into a silo of hand grenade throwing echo chambers. Some hilarious takes by people who have completely lost touch of reality.

If I said this in Bluesky they would just assume I was talking about Truth Social.

[-] binux@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago

One time on Bluesky I made unfortunate contact with a psycho that genuinely believed bigotry could be a good thing “if applied correctly.” It’s basically liberal MAGA over there

[-] Stern@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I keep seeing the echo chamber thing but at this point most social media sites are. Bluesky is just a left leaning one, which is the only thing that really sets it apart.

I keep seeing the echo chamber thing but at this point most social media sites are. Bluesky is just a left leaning one, which is the only thing that really sets it apart.

I mean honestly I think left leaning is basically being neutral and accepting scientific consensus. To me the non federated part of bluesky is kind of what makes me consider it a time bomb. Even if it were good now, we already know one owner switch, hostile takeover, threats from the government etc... can flip a network around faster than you can blink. It's why I literally see federation as the only way forward for the internet, and find it so ridiculous that everyone bolted to bluesky to escape twitters crash instead of mastadon. It's the same key problem. it can go down in moments.

[-] Dearth@lemmy.world 1 points 54 minutes ago

Maybe im missing something. Mastadon doesn't work at all like Twitter or bluesky. In haven't used it in a couple years though, blsky has a discover feed where you can sew accounts you aren't following. When i was using it, Mastodon only shows posts from people you follow.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 32 points 6 hours ago

Sounds a bit like Lemmy lol

[-] mesamunefire@piefed.social 7 points 3 hours ago

This style of posting lends itself to having "hot takes" get upvoted and actual discussions have middling success.

At least with us, you can chose the tech and put it up yourself. Like right now you are using slrpnk.net and im using piefed.social on a lemmy.world server. Without any issues. We (the collective WE) made this happen without huge billionaires having a strangle hold on the way we interact. Its not perfect, but its better than a LOT of the alternatives.

[-] redditmademedoit@piefed.zip 3 points 4 hours ago

You’re not wrong, but a difference is that most lemmings don’t really want to be here, i.e are in exile and pretty up front about that. I’m not saying it isn’t an echo chamber, but it’s a much messier one than Bluesky.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 hour ago

Really? I would not say that personally.

[-] chortle_tortle@mander.xyz 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

I think to whatever degree innate tribalism of humans play roles in internet communities, federated servers is still the best way to reflect the good and hinder the bad. Migratory identity would take activity pub a long way in making federation better, but even without it activity pub shows bluesky to be a monolithic platform with a federated coat of paint.

[-] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Ya, you are not wrong there. It's been a mixed bag at times but YPTB been good proof of this place goin downhill too.

Basically no social media is safe.

[-] _fryerDan@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 hours ago

yep, im there just to scream into the void without having to actually engage with maga

[-] JohnWorks@sh.itjust.works 16 points 6 hours ago

I do like the idea of more competition to reddit here but we'll see how well it does. I know bluesky is considered like fauxfediverse but it's better than nothing as far as mainstream apps go.

[-] snooggums@piefed.world 4 points 4 hours ago

The only reason it is currently better is that it is comparatively smaller than the mainstream apps. The more successful and mainstream it becomes the more it with enshittify.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Well it also has the benefit of not being run by Elon Musk.

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 3 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Is it? I think nothing would be preferable. Let the masses go to the fediverse instead.

[-] dil@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago

Weirdly, fediverse might be more viable if it's a bunch of corporations fighting for control. They have money for ads, prob wont shut down due to an influx of too many users and lack of moderation. (or they will like digg, but that was more because they got a bunch of liberal tech nerds instead of the maga, aihype, wsb crowd they were pushing for)

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

Anyone who expects BlueSky to go down a different road than Twitter probably has stock.

[-] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 hours ago

Bring sold to a narcissistic Nazi for 44 billion?

[-] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 5 hours ago

Can't enshittify something that's shit from the start.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

With the dumb characters limit?

[-] morto@piefed.social 10 points 4 hours ago

Character limit is a clever strategy to make users s

[-] XLE@piefed.social 5 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I'm not sure about that implementation, but this certainly sounds clever. Especially if they can roll it out before Facebook manages to do the same thing.

Now whether this will be used for scraping AI data, or whether it will be a privacy disaster in the long run, remains to be seen.
