Hi everyone

Ive recently become aware of the 1.111b class domains from xyz and decided to buy one. They have serveral purchasing options from either themselves, namecheap, dynadot, porkbun, godaddy. All of these sites have slightly different options and prices. I like the idea of buying a 10 year lease too, not all of the providers have that options

What im wondering

  1. Do i need WHOIS privacy?
  2. Do i need SSL support?
  3. What else should i know before committing to buying a domain
  4. Do i need to use my actual details when registering a site? I dont like the idea of anyone being able to look up my personal information just because I have a domain for a server (but perhaps thats just the price of admission)

Thank you for reading, this is my first time buying a domain and i want to make sure i do it properly

Yeah I totally agree with you. I'm just saying that problem is not specific to hunting animals. Wealth inequality finds its way into most parts of life. But yeah I'm with you

I find this discussion really interesting.

The other night i watched Loius Theroux's African Hunting Party documentary where he goes to Africa and interviews Americans who pay big money to kill wild animals. Some of them endangered i believe. The money made from it goes into conservation to ensure these species are kept alive to keep the whole thing going.

I remember years ago there was a guy who killed a rhino on one of these hunts. People went mental about it. Turns out that rhino was killing baby rhinos and was itself depopulating the already small population of rhino. He paid $350,000 to do it too. Radiolab did a great episode on it here

I have been a vegetarian for the last 15 or so years. I doubt i will ever eat meat again and i most certainly will not eat factory farmed meat every again. In the film, the hunters ask the question "is this worst than buying meat from the supermarket?". Honestly, i dont think it is, the virtually live in freedom untill they are killed. The conditions of factory farmed animals is much much worse. Im not likely to pick up a gun and start hunting myself anytime soon (unless its a pest) but i thought its an interesting conversation to have.

Hello again everyone

Im hoping this is the correct place to ask. I recently posted about Radicale here (link goes to a blorp client as thats what im using this moment/side note, how does sharing links to lemmy posts work?). Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Please let me know if im bothering you guys too much haha.

Im trying to self host my calendar and contacts. Id like to get away from google as much as i can. Ive made big steps but the last bits like calendar, contacts and email are the hardest.

Here goes

I use a trueNAS system and have Radicale installed as one of the apps

My goals

  1. Set a password for the caldav which i can then use on thunderbird and DAVx⁵

There is a username and password to my Radicale GUI but im dont think there is one for my calDAV within Radicale. subscribed to it through thunderbird and it didnt ask for credentials. I have no idea how to do this

  1. Upload my calendar from google, the ics file.

I tried running this in the trueNAS shell

curl -u name:PASSWORD -X PUT http://xxx.xxx.x.xx:30280/name/288f762c --data-binary @/mnt/super_rad_cool_pool/big_data/name_email@gmail.com.ics

and got back

Warning: Couldn't read data from file
Warning: "/mnt/super_rad_cool_pool/big_data/name_email@gmail.com.ics",
Warning: this makes an empty POST.
truenas_admin@truenas[~]$

The other thing, and i feel like a proper idiot for asking this. im not sure if im mean to be running this in the main trueNAS shell or in the Radicale container here:

  1. Eventually I will also do the same with my contacts too

But one thing at a time

As you can probably tell, i am not savvy with this kind of thing. Ive gotten alot better as ive learnt to self host things but its taken me a long time. Interacting with the shell is one of my weak points. Usually i use app gui but Radicale is slim on that front, its a good opportunity to learn!

Thank you for reading and having me part of this great community. I enjoy reading the posts

Hi everyone

I posted here awhile ago about something similar but wanted to ask a follow up question.

If I got a 1.111b class xyz domain for my NAS, would that have any issues?

Its mainly just going to be so family and friends can access my jellyfin.

I saw its ten bucks for ten years on their site so its a great price. I'd rather than than 20 bucks a year.

Thank you

Hi everyone

Proud girldad of a beautiful 1 year old here. Life is good and I now love being a father.

We are just having one problem. She attacks her Grandma and leaves nasty scratches on her face. We aren't sure how to proceed.

What we do currently is if she attacks, we firmly say "no, we don't treat grandma like that" and then encourage gentle touch. It's not working.

We are firmly against physical discipline, we tried time out once but she went mental, possibly she's too young for time out.

Can you tell we're first time parents? Haha

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi everyone

I'm making a recipe and it says to use 1 box of the roux. Using a whole box seems like alot. Does it mean the whole box or 1 square

What other way can I make vegetarian japanese curry? With or without the roux

Its definitely a concern that needs addressing

I'm fair new to the open source world, just afew years. I'm not a dev so I do not contribute my time in that way. One thing that struck me at the start (and I still think about) is how demanding people are of devs with zero gratitude for the work they do and share. I still find it utterly bizarre and entitled. It's disappointing

Hi everyone

I decided to give home assistant a go as I'm tired of the lifx app. Plus, it means I can move to different brands of lights and control it on the same app.

I am not overly tech savvy but I know enough to operate my TrueNAS server for my needs. That being said I'm always learning and emjoy it.

I installed it through the truenas apps page (basically just docker). Install was successful, I created a user account and logged in on my phone through the app. So far so good.

I went to search for lifx bulbs but it's not finding anything.

I'm wondering, have I missed any steps to ensure HA is able to discover bulbs?

Any advice appreciated

I spent well over an hour tonight trying to get a light online and was ultimately unsuccessful.

They are great lights once online but setting them up is tough. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Probably a silly question but the .uk domain is really cheap. If I'm not in the UK can I still use that domain for my server without issue?

Its like 50 bucks for a ten year lease

Honestly I think he believes his own bullshit

Where are people getting drives at $10/tb?

Where I live it's $50/tb

Hi everyone

I'm trying to degoogle as much as possible. I've heard about this thing called calDAV and cardDAV but I have no idea how to use it.

With radicale, do I need to install some other somewhere in order to use it?

I'm just looking for basic useage for myself only at this stage. I'd like to be able to self host my own calendar and contacts. Is radicale appropriate for this?

Is it safe to self host a calendar?

Can a self hosted calendar still send and receive invites to other calendars?

Any help greatly appreciated, thank you

This is awesome

Is there much of an open source language learning community? There's afew languages I'm interested in learning and prefer open source

[-] philanthropicoctopus 28 points 1 month ago

Yeah this is cool. Could have been much worse than Motorola. Looking forward to this

Kia ora chaps

I've been buying $10 Kmart sliders and they last around 4 months. Id like to buy some proper good jandals with good foot support.

Are there any brands you recommend?

[-] philanthropicoctopus 12 points 2 months ago

They are in talks with a major android manufacturer to build graphene phone.

I love this idea

Eventually, electric cars will become the norm. For an open source OS it just needs enough commercial interest. That's largely what lets down alot of open source projects by the looks of it.

I saw there is a new open source printer out there now. I'm excited about that and interested to see how it goes.

Most of the public don't see the value in open source or the barriers to entry are not worth it for them.

I'm not a dev so I'm certainly not casting shade on all the wonderful projects out there, more just an observation that you usually need to learn abit about computers to be able to access these projects. I've enjoyed the learning experiences
