Several years ago, I was a Realtor for one year. Somehow, I don't remember how, I got signed up on a list under the name "Henry". My name is not Henry, but Henry gets an ungodly amount of real estate spam, both emails and texts under that name. Blocking them does nothing. But, it's not just real estate anymore, now Henry gets political spam, too.

Henry will be sent spam decades after I die.

My father's house still gets junk mail and allegedly "preapproved" credit card offers addressed to my cat.

Still getting calls for Charlie 2 years after changing my number. Although there's some speculation that while Charlie Sr is deceased, Charlie Jr is alive, kicking, and in a not insignificant amount of debt.

By adding my email address to EVERY spam list, I will ensure my immortality!!! Bwahahaha!

Span lists have only existed for about 40 years, even if one of them has been active for all that time is quite a stretch to assume any single one will go on for more than an average human lifetime.

And for the past 40 years, people and companies have been selling their "user data" from one entity to another, so it really doesn't require any particular one of them to last more than an average human lifetime.

Granted, I'm 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% sure the comment you replied to was really only making a joke, so no pedantry is really required.

the comment you replied to was really only making a joke,

Did the cartoonishly evil laugh give it away?

I had heard that the second death is when everybody who knew you has died, and the third is the last time somebody speaks your name. The spam stopping would have to be the fourth death.

You assume we have one email. Why is this assumed? 🤣 LOL! Like hello! My name is Bob Baker and my one and only official email is BBaker@gmail.com. LOL no! Fuck no! If you use your actual name in your email you're absolutely nuts. Take that off and get 400 different emails instead.... Bdsmenthuciast@proton.com bdsmer@yaweh.org, bdsm4life@tiedup.com... Good stuff! Use them for 5 months each or for one school year or whatever.

[-] expatriado@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

the title refers to mail not email

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

That's because I didn't read this properly. Maybe email is the 4rth? So having more addresses gets you more life?

So, I’m officially immortal

My wife's parents died 7 years ago and we still get stuff for them, at our house no less! I have no idea how that happened, but I do wish it stopped. The latest is i am getting a txt message every few weeks for the past few months on my work cell for my wifes mothers apparent debt of an unpaid gas bill. The levels to understand how any of that makes sense is beyond me. It can't be mine, we only have an electric house and is another company. Why 7 years later? Whos using her name? Why is my cell phone number somehow the phone linked to this? Im to afraid to click the link just in case it is fake, but the more txts i get the more real it feels since ive never had consistent txts from the same number over and over like this.

Someone who lived at my current address back in the 80s and 90s and who died almost 25 years ago still gets mail delivered here.

But also, does this mean that people with very common names are nearly second death immortal? Should I change my name to John Smith so that I don't die that second time until the very last piece of mail gets delivered to the very final John Smith that ever exists? I need to know. I NEED TO KNOW.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
